Are Hannah and Will About to Become More Than Friends (Again) on Chicago Med?

Are they crossing into more-than-friends territory?

Asher Knows Her Patient from Narcotics Anonymous | NBC’s Chicago Med

Chicago Med's Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) and Dr. Hannah Asher (Jessy Schram) have a will-they-won't-they story unlike any other.

How to Watch

Watch Chicago Med Wednesdays at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

From the moment Will and Hannah met in Season 5, there was an instant connection and instant complications. While their relationship was full of passion, it only replaced Hannah's relationship with drugs, forcing their eventual separation. Hannah left the hospital to work on her sobriety, leaving Will to process their tumultuous relationship alone.

But after extensive work and self-reflection, Hannah returns to Gaffney Chicago Medical as a sober and much more grounded version of herself in Season 7. Since her return, many Chicago Med fans have been eager to see if there might be a potential rekindling on the horizon. Are Will and Hannah both in a place where they might explore a more healthy relationship? Chicago Med Season 8, Episode 7, titled "The Clothes Make the Man... or Do They?" seemed to imply that it's a distinct possibility.

Will and Hannah collide into each other on Chicago Med

Hannah has been hard at work since returning to Med. Not only has she had her hands full with patients, but Season 8 has also explored her struggle to redefine herself and escape her reputation. Will and Hannah easily fell back into friendship, even briefly neighbors at one point. But it seems that with every passing episode, the platonic nature of their relationship is put to the test.

Will and Hannah's friendship status has never been more tested than in Episode 7, when the two had to work together closer than ever. The episode begins with Gaffney Medical facing a shortage of clean scrubs and ER nurses after Dr. Vanessa Taylor's (Asjha Cooper) exit, forcing Hannah and Will to visit the thrift store to grab some sterile work clothes. Before heading out, Will had a conversation with Dr. Choi (Brian Tee) about his and Hannah's relationship, which he insists is platonic.

"If you say so," Dr. Choi smirked, likely echoing many Med fan thoughts while watching.

When Will and Hannah return to the hospital, they're immediately thrown back into action when a van arrives carrying a pregnant woman named Maya. After briefly getting into the van to evaluate Maya and get her into the building, the driver quickly leaves. While performing a C-section later on, Maya suddenly begins overdosing. The catch? Maya insists that she wasn't using any drugs while pregnant. It's revealed Maya's driver was arrested shortly after the hospital for transporting synthetic opioids. Maya, Will, and Hannah were all exposed.

While Hannah handles the exposure fine, she finds Will collapsed on the ground in the middle of an overdose. Hannah resuscitates him and insists that they both decontaminate. It's time to hit the showers. Together. As the pair enter the locker room, Will tells Hannah that she can go first, but is quickly shut down.

"I'm not letting you out of my sight," Hannah insisted, all the while stripping down. "Oh, come on, what's the big deal? How many times have we seen each other naked?"

The former flames then stripped down and entered the showers, and Will didn't seem too uncomfortable about it. Hannah even feels comfortable enough to scrub Will's back, like a married couple. While Will may have been trying to grasp at a platonic friendship with Hannah before, the showering situation caused Will to quickly slip.

"It's crazy," Hannah mused. "We're right back at where we started."

"What do you mean?" Will asked, doing his best to avert his gaze.

"Well, when we first met," Hannah explained. "You were narcaning me."

"I guess we're even," Will said with a grin.

"There's no need to keep score."

In Episode 7, fans witnessed firsthand how far Hannah has come. Not only does Hannah successfully play an Uno-reverse by recovering Will, but in the episode's final moments, she proves how much she values her sobriety after a day of exposure.

After checking that Maya and the baby are well, Will approached Hannah with that tell-tale smile that fans might recognize from Seasons 5 and 6 of Chicago Med.

"You hungry?" Will asked. "There's this great new burrito stand over on Lake."

"I think I'm going to try to hit a meeting on the way home," Hannah explained. "Just to be on the safe side. You are more than welcome to join if you want."

Will smiles and declines the invite, explaining that he's confident he'll never touch the stuff after their experience together. The two smitten doctors then shared a heated moment before saying goodnight, with the tension between the two palpable. Hannah may have turned Will down, but not out of disinterest in spending time together.

Seeing Hannah prove herself to her coworkers is gratifying for all Chicago Med fans rooting for the doctor's success. Hannah understands her limits, and while she certainly seems to be more flirtatious with Will in recent episodes, she isn't afraid to table those feelings to prioritize her sobriety. The downfall of Wannah (Aalstead? Hill? Hasher?) in earlier seasons was Hannah lacking those priorities, but she's proving throughout Season 8 that she doesn't need a savior anymore.

Does this mean she and Will are ready to redefine their relationship? Find out by watching Chicago Med Wednesdays at 8/7c on NBC.
