The Latest Magnum P.I. Episode Made a Hilarious Tom Selleck Reference
Did you catch Magnum P.I.'s most recent Easter egg for fans of the original series?
We still have T.C. We still have Rick. And, of course, we still have Thomas Magnum — but Magnum in this new series is missing something that became the original character's signature: a mustache. The clean-shaven Jay Hernandez opted not to replicate OG Magnum Tom Selleck's look, telling TV Guide, "No one is going to replace Tom Selleck. You can't do that. You gotta sorta reinvent it."
Reinvent they have. The new Magnum P.I. has been running for five action-packed seasons, and the series finale is just around the corner. Showrunners are making this season one of the most memorable yet. The romances are hot, the mysteries are enticing, and every now and then, we get a reference to the OG Magnum, P.I. that hits fans with nostalgia. Season 5, Episode 16 ("Run with the Devil") did just that, making a blink-and-you-missed-it reference to — you guessed it — Selleck's mustache. Read on for details.
Magnum P.I. makes a Tom Selleck mustache joke in Season 5, Episode 16
In Episode 16, Rick (Zachary Knighton) was buzzing with excitement about the upcoming Marine Corp. Ball. He was committed to getting his fellow Marine buddy, T.C. (Stephen Hill), to agree to attend after his recent breakup. Magnum's crew doesn't get to kick back and relax often, so T.C. eventually agreed.
As the Ball began, everyone arrived dressed to the nines. T.C. and Rick looked especially sharp, sporting matching mustaches. "Look at us, mustache twins!" Rick pointed out. "Now all we got to do is get Magnum to grow one."
"You think he could pull it off?" T.C. asked apprehensively.
"Naaah!" T.C. and Rick agreed in unison, bursting into laughter over the idea. It's a cheeky nod to the fact that, actually, no one has ever pulled off a mustache better than Selleck's Magnum. See the above photo as proof.
