Lavender’s Audition had everyone on their feet, cheering madly and wiping away tears — and Judge Heidi Klum pressing the Golden Buzzer. Heidi summed up the experience, saying, “I feel like I just fell in love.”

Who is Lavender Darcangelo?

Lavender, 27, is a blind and autistic singer and a disability activist from Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

I’ve been singing since I was 3 years old. I didn't talk until I was 4 and a half,” she told AGT.

Her love of music grew after joining an after-school program run by Wil Darcangelo in 2010. Seven years later, Wil and his husband, Jamie, adopted Lavender. Lavender’s vocal talent went viral in 2019 after a video of her singing “Part of Your World” at the church where Jamie is a Unitarian-Universalist minister was posted on social media.

Lavender told Judge Howie Mandel that her “dream is to build a school where the classes are based off of what kids are naturally curious about.”

What song did Lavender Darcangelo sing on AGT

For her AGT Audition, Lavender performed  “Out Here On My Own,” a ballad from the 1980 movie Fame sung and made famous by Irene Cara. Written by Lesley Gore and Michael Gore, it was nominated for an Academy Award.

“Sometimes I wonder where I’ve been,” the song begins. “Who I am, do I fit in?”

The words set the scene as Lavender, who later shared that she has faced those questions herself, put her own stamp of the well-known song.

By the time she got to these lyrics, “Were always proving who we are, always reaching for that rising star,” it was clear that the four Judges and the entire audience were in awe.

AGT Judges react to Lavender

Howie Mandel: “That was amazing. Everybody was on their feet. Nobody in this room was sitting. When you sing it is so exciting. It gives everybody hope that maybe we can all achieve our dreams if we just go for it. You are a dream come true.”

Simon Cowell: “That was sensational. Everything about that was just magic. Magical. You have such a talent. You have such an amazing personality. I'm so happy that you've come on our show … because this is an audition I’ll never forget."

Sofia Vergara: “I forgot that I was judging you and I was just enjoying your voice. That was beautiful.”

Heidi Klum: “I feel like I just fell in love. And you know this AGT journey is an amazing journey. And I would love to be your cheerleader and hold your hand all the way to the finish line. What do you say?”

At that point, no more words were needed. Heidi pressed the Golden Buzzer with all her might.
