How “Magnificent” CORii “Stepped Up” in Her Battle and Got a Double Steal

You just never know what's going to happen during Battles!

By Josh Weiss

CORii and Ms. Monét got incredibly soulful on the October 23rd Battles episode of The Voice, with the Team Reba Artists duking it out over a powerful version of Patti LaBelle's "New Attitude."

How to Watch

Watch The Voice Mondays and Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

Gwen Stefani was "literally blown away" by Ms. Monét, who just so happened to be a former backup singer for the returning Coach. John Legend echoed that sentiment, praising her performance as "consistently amazing." His admiration for Monét became quite clear when he suddenly stood up out of his chair during a particularly memorable high note.

CORii, meanwhile, got Season 23 champion Niall Horan to voice (no pun intended) regret over not turning during her Blind Audition. He told her, "The minute you opened your mouth, I was like, 'Why did I face the wall for two minutes?' To be honest, I do remember pitch issues in the Blind Auditions, but this was night and day. Different level to where you were the last time."

"You started somehow to lock into your voice," Stefani told CORii. "It was like, 'Wow! She has range and power!' It just kept getting better and better and better."

"I was so proud of you both," McEntire told her mentees. "You came out with such confidence; you were a team. You could go out on the road as a duet right now. I loved it!"

The winner of the Battle, ultimately, was Ms. Monét. "I was totally impressed with CORii, but I had to go with Ms. Monét," McEntire explained. "She's just so much of a powerhouse [with a] great stage presence. I was just blown away with her, and I'm so glad she was on my team."

But that's not where the story ended. Just as CORii was leaving the stage, Horan and Stefani both invoked their right to steal her for their teams. "The night and day between the Audition [and Battle] is something that really excites me," Horan said. "You were up against an unbelievable singer. I think you've got more strings to your bow than we think, and I'd be very excited to work with you."

"What I think I can help you with is just like a tweak. A little tweak to show you that you've got so much charisma," argued Stefani. "It's just, like, 'How do you tame it just a little bit, so that you can be that much cooler and that much more you?' I want to work with that [and] I'd love to have you on Team Gwen."

Faced with two incredible choices, CORii chose Team Gwen. "I had to steal CORii," Stefani said. "She just has so much power and range. She's a perfect addition to my team."
