Kelly Severide's Most Memorable Romantic Moments on Chicago Fire

The firefighter has had his fair share of ups and downs with romantic partners in his 11 seasons on the show.

By Megan Lasher

Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) has spent his tenure on Chicago Fire on a whole lot of emotional roller coasters. Beyond the complicated life and death of his father and his own rise to the top of Firehouse 51, Severide has been through plenty of relationship drama, keeping fans on the edges of their seats.

How to Watch

Watch Chicago Fire Wednesdays at 9/8c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

Before he committed to Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo), Severide dated some interesting women. Revisit his most memorable relationship stories ahead of the show's Season 12, which promises even more "Stellaride" moments.

Kelly Severide and the Two Renées of Season 1

The first Reneé with whom Severide was involved was Renée Whaley (Kelli Barrett). She had been Severide's ex-fiancée before Season 1 even began, but appeared on the show in Season 1, Episodes 15 and 16 ("Nazdrovya!" and "Viral"), when her brother, Eric (Shane McRae), held Severide responsible for her drunk driving accident.

The second Renée, Renée Royce (Sarah Shahi), came into the picture when Severide saved her after an electrical line burst next to her car. The two began dating, and spent a lot of time together throughout Season 1. However, Renée got a promotion that sent her to Spain, and Severide did not want to leave his job to move abroad, so the couple split.

In Season 1, Episode 23 ("A Hell of a Ride"), Renée returned from Spain pregnant, and asked Severide to co-parent with her. He ultimately learned that the baby could not feasibly be his, so the two went their separate ways once again.

Who was Severide's first wife on Chicago Fire?

Severide married a woman he'd known for just 24 hours, Brittany Baker-Severide (Serinda Swan), in Season 3, Episode 6 ("Madmen and Fools"). Brittany won the firefighter's heart while they were both in Las Vegas, after she led him to victory at the craps table in Season 3. The two, it turned out, had both recently suffered difficult losses: Severide's close friend, Leslie Shay (Lauren German), had been killed in a fire; and Brittany's sister, Kathleen, had been killed in a car accident.

In Episode 7 ("Nobody Touches Anything") Severide announced to all of Firehouse 51 that he was married, and even convinced Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) and Gabby Dawson (Monica Raymund) to allow Brittany to move into the apartment they all shared. As time went on, however, it became clear that the couple was not compatible and Brittany returned home to Florida.

Kelly Severide's Relationship with Chicago Med's April Sexton

In Season 3 of Chicago Fire, Severide began seeing a nurse April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) from Chicago Med. In Episode 17 ("Forgive You Anything"), the two ran into each other and it was revealed that they were old childhood friends. The old connection quickly turned romantic, but ended just as quickly.

April decided to go on leave from the hospital and travel the world, which she announced to Severide in Season 3, Episode 20 ("You Know Where to Find Me"). Severide asked to take her out to dinner before her flight, but she said she had too much to do. "We'll get together when I come back," she promised him.

Kelly Severide's Relationship with Anna Turner

In Season 5, Episode 8 ("One Hundred"), Severide started donating bone marrow to a leukemia patient named Anna Turner (Charlotte Sullivan). The two slowly began a relationship as he continued saving her life with his donations.

Severide stood by Anna's side through the ups and downs of her treatment, and continually tried to make her comfortable in Chicago. Sadly, though, Anna's condition deteriorated and, in Episode 20 ("Carry Me"), she lost consciousness and the team was not allowed to resuscitate her because of her stated end-of-life wishes.

Severide watched her passing and mourned her death. It was hinted that he helped ensure that a wing of the hospital was dedicated to her.

When did Kelly Severide and Stella Kidd begin dating?

Severide and Kidd actually go way back. She told other members of Firehouse 51 that he had flirted with her years ago at the Fire Academy, and they rekindled their spark in Season 4. Their first on-screen kiss happened in Episode 21' ("Kind of a Crazy Idea"). However, it wasn't an immediate happy ending (it wouldn't be a Chicago Fire romance without some big obstacles in the way, right?).

In Season 5, the pair broke up because Kidd's ex-husband, Grant, had caused turmoil in both of their lives, and Kidd was still willing to help the man, which made Severide upset.

By Season 6, Episode 15 ("Deathtrap"), they were back in action, though, and happier than ever. They tied the knot in the Season 10 finale ("The Magnificent City of Chicago").

Season 11 brought more hardship for the duo, as Severide left Chicago to pursue his training in arson investigation, a dream Kidd didn't even realize he'd had. Kidd found out that Severide had relocated after the training, and at the end of the season, she left Chicago to go find him. That left fans on the edges of their seats, awaiting the Season 12 premiere (which is coming in January 2024).

In the trailer for the season — which you can watch at the top of this post — it was confirmed that Severide and Kidd will reunite. They're seen having a serious moment in which Severide says, "I'm here. We're in this together."
