The Chicago Fire Showrunner Says Brett's Future Is a "Rollercoaster": Details

Chicago Fire showrunner Andrea Newman reveals Brett has "a little journey for herself with her baby in her life ahead."

By Jessica White

The Chicago Fire Season 11 finale ended with Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) proposing to Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer), and fans are dying to know her answer.

How to Watch

Watch Chicago Fire Wednesdays at 9/8c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

As fans know, Casey and Brett broke up in the Season 11 premiere after realizing long distance wasn't working. Since then, Brett's had a whirlwind of a year. Her most recent development? Becoming the legal guardian of a newborn girl named Julia. Couple this with Casey's surprise return to Chicago, and there's some serious excitement going into the Chicago Fire Season 12 premiere on January 17.

But what, exactly, will happen? We talked to Chicago Fire showrunner Andrea Newman to get some answers.

"[Sylvie's] got a lot on her mind," Newman explained before revealing the Season 12 premiere will pick up six months into the future, a significant time jump following the proposal and Brett becoming Julia's mom

"When we see her, we'll see that she has a lot of plans in place," Newman said before playfully adding, "And, um, not all of them will go accordingly."

True to Casey and Brett's Chicago Fire love story, these two will need to navigate several hurdles before they get their happily ever after. Sadly, Newman guarantees things won't be smooth-sailing for Brett off the bat.

"There will be a rollercoaster for her," Newman revealed. "No matter what she thinks is happening or what she's perfectly trying to plan, it doesn't necessarily go the way she wants it to. She's got a little journey for herself with her baby in her life ahead."

Newman says Julia has not only become a permanent fixture within Brett's family but within the Firehouse 51 family, as well. That said, it seems Brett will still have her hands full between caring for Julia and figuring out any next steps with Casey. Chi-Hards can't wait to see what's coming down the pipeline. Will Casey be there to help Brett through her "rollercoaster"? Watch the Chicago Fire Season 12 premiere on Wednesday, January 17 at 9/8c on NBC to find out.
