Hang Time (1995-2000)
Hernandez’s first major role was that of Antonio Lopez in NBC’s sitcom Hang Time. He first appeared in Season 4 and became a primary character in Seasons 5 and 6 until the show’s finale. His character was a basketball player from Texas who was also the boyfriend of another lead character.
Considered to be his major breakout, Hernandez starred in a main role alongside Kirsten Dunst in the 2001 teen romantic drama Crazy/Beautiful. He played a high school student named Carlos Nunez who was the love interest of Nicole Oakley (Dunst). While Carlos is a responsible straight-A student with solid career ambitions, Nicole is a wild partier who frequently gets in trouble with the law. Nevertheless, the two fall in love while helping each other navigate adolescence.
Hernandez was praised for his performance in the film, with critic Roger Ebert saying that he played his role with “real conviction.”
Friday Night Lights (2004)
Going back to his sport roots, Hernandez also had a large role in the hit drama movie Friday Night Lights. Based on a true story, he played the role of Brian Chavez, a football player who went onto have a successful life beyond the sport.
Showing off his versatile acting range, Hernandez was also a main character in the horror movie Hostel. He played the role of college student Paxton Rodriguez who travels to Europe with his friends only to meet women who lure them into a torturing spree.
Bad Moms (2016)
Hernandez has also dabbled in the world of comedy with his role in Bad Moms. In the movie, Hernandez plays Jessie Harkness, a young widower who dates the lead character, Amy Mitchell (Mila Kunis).
Suicide Squad (2016)
In Suicide Squad, Hernandez plays El Diablo, an ex-gang leader who's attempting to reform his life before being recruited to join the Suicide Squad against his will.
