Hear the “Unexpected” Note Tanner Massey Hit That Secured His Spot in the Lives
Tanner Massey made it through the Playoffs on Season 24 of The Voice with his performance of "Impossible" by Shontelle.
Massey, who joined Gwen Stefani's team during the Knockouts, has been a fan-favorite all season. For the Playoffs, which sees each Coach attempting to narrow their teams down from six to three, Massey opted to sing Shontelle’s 2010 song “Impossible.”
“This song actually fits Tanner perfectly. He has a bit of an alternative edge, but he also feels quite pop,” Stefani said. “I gotta be honest: I think that Tanner, out of everybody on my team, has a really good chance of making it outside of the show. Each time he performs, he sees his gift even clearer. I think he just now needs to get in the studio and write songs.”

Stefani’s only notes for the 19-year-old during rehearsals were to try not to let the vocals get pinched and to make sure he was letting the truth of the lyrics show. As we said, the performance itself started out a little rough, but Massey found his footing — and beautifully so.
“I felt like in the beginning, I wasn’t sure if you were hearing the key exactly,” John Legend said. “But then once everything kind of came together, it felt so good, and you hit a note so unexpected, we all looked at ourselves, like, whoop!”
Stefani added, “I’m sad about the beginning, but I understand. It happens to me all the time. You’ve grown a lot before my eyes in a short amount of time, and I’m super proud of you.”
“Tanner has so much range and he has so much power," she said. "Being able to help him grow as an Artist is something that I just thrive off of. I had to put him into the Lives and see what he could do.”
“He’s the real deal,” Horan said about Massey, who used to be on his team. (Stefani stole him during the Knockouts.) “I really regret letting Tanner go. I have a feeling it’s going to come back to bite me if he gets through to the Lives.”
