Hear Why “Astounding” Taylor Deneen Was Named The Voice's “Best Soul Singer”
John Legend was thrilled he had one spot left on his team for Taylor Deneen.
When teams are filling up on The Voice, Coaches need to be selective. Worst-case, an incredible talent will perform their Blind Audition, and a Coach with a full roster will be unable to try and add them to their team. That’s what happened to two of the Coaches when Taylor Deneen performed.
When the 23-year-old Oklahoma City resident performed Childish Gambino’s "Redbone," John Legend slapped his button to turn his chair around almost instantly, and Gwen Stefani followed shortly thereafter.

“My team is full up, and I’m so sad because that is one hell of a voice,” explained Niall Horan.

Legend was particularly moved by Deneen’s Blind Audition.
“I am stunned right now. That was incredible,” he said. “You just kept getting better and better and better, you kept finding new places to go.”
Deneen explained that she was a recent graduate of the Berklee College of Music and that she was currently making a living in her home city as a songwriter, largely doing custom songs for anniversaries and holidays. She even gave the Coaches a bonus performance, singing a tune about The Voice that she penned herself.
Ultimately Deneen went Team Legend.
“Boy, was I glad I didn’t fill up my team before Taylor arrived because I found the best soul singer of the entire Blinds,” Legend said in celebration.
