John Legend Playfully Shaded Blake Shelton While Welcoming Reba to The Voice

Legend had some thoughts about McEntire and Shelton's battle over the red chair.

Reba McEntire is a newbie Coach on Season 24 of The Voice, stepping in and representing country music following Blake Shelton's excit from the show. And even though she has big shoes to fill, the other Coaches have no doubt that she'll bring her own special energy to the show.

How to Watch

Watch the Season 26 premiere of The Voice on Monday, September 23 at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

"I just want to say that I am thrilled to be sitting in Blake's chair. I hope I do it justice," McEntire told John Legend, Gwen Stefani, and Niall Horan during a fun new promo for Season 24.

"Maybe someone can finally class up that chair," Legend joked, throwing some light hearted shade Shelton's way.

Country star Blake Shelton has class in his own way, as he made a graceful departure from The Voice after 23 Seasons for the selfless reason of wanting to spend more time with his family. However, he and McEntire clearly have strong opinions about sitting in the iconic red swivel chair after his exit.

“The hardest part about filming my final season of The Voice is I’m very territorial about this particular chair that I’m sitting in,” Shelton said in an interview with NBC Insider.  "I’m trying to negotiate and work out a deal where I can actually take my chair with me. I mean, it's one thing to say,  'I’m handing my chair off to the next Coach’ or whatever, but I literally don’t want to hand my chair off to whoever the next Coach is. I wanna take this one with me. I understand they need to use this area, but I don’t feel good about letting someone else use my chair,” he joked.

In the promo, McEntire seemed to be highly enjoying her placement on the chair. "This was [Blake's] chair," she said before singing a "hallelujah" note. "So what I plan on doing is - I'm channeling Blake. I'm gonna win this sucker."

"She's had a massively successful recording career. She's been performing. She's beloved. She's got such a magnetic personality," Legend gushed.

"When we talk about icons and legends, [there are] not too many bigger than Reba. It's amazing to have her here at Season 24," Horan said, also praising Reba's ability to teach the Artists on their craft both technically and emotionally.

"Its super intimating going head to head with Reba, because she's so experienced and has such a legacy. She's an icon," Stefani added.

Meanwhile, McEntire had her own thoughts about joining the show. "I'm definitely glad to be a Coach," she said. "I've been in this business going on 50 years. and so hopefully, I'll be able to give some of the pointers that people were sweet enough to give me, and also the things that I've learned on my own the hard way," she added, before saying that she wants people on her team that "touch her heart and soul."
