Gwen Stefani Shares Why Her Marriage to Blake Shelton "Just Works"

The Voice Coach on the reasons that her marriage to the country crooner functions so well.

By Jackie Manno & Jessica White

Despite their ostensible differences, Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton are two peas in a pod.

How to Watch

Watch The Voice Mondays and Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

In July 2023, Stefani posted a video montage on her TikTok of cute moments between her and Shelton.

In the video, Stefani and Shelton are first seen riding in a truck together in the woods, followed by a funny moment in which Stefani hands Shelton some lip gloss while the two are sitting in The Voice Coach chairs. Then, Shelton holds up an orange cone as a meganphone before a clip of Stefani and Shelton performing together onstage.

"When you're with a guy from Oklahoma who rides tractors and you're from Orange County [in California] but it just works," Stefani wrote on the video, with her single "True Babe" playing over the clip.

But the TikTok is just one example of the ways in which the two make the phrase "opposite attract" a sweet reality.

Since Shelton's exit from The Voice in 2023, he's been soaking up quality time with Stefani and his stepchildren. Life on their Oklahoma ranch has been a dream for the power couple, and Shelton has been delighted to see a brand new side of his wife as she settles into her Oklahoma surroundings and records more country music.

"I'm not going to say that she's become this country girl," Blake told E! News. "But I just think we're starting to see a different side of Gwen. I think country music has kind of given her the chance to show what an incredible vocalist she is and an incredible songwriter."

Aside from appearing on Shelton's Fully Loaded: God's Country and Body Language albums, Stefani teamed up with Shelton for a heartwarming cover of The Judds' "Love Is Alive" in August 2023.

"Oh my God, Gwen, yes, more music please," Shelton teased when speaking to E! News. "I need that. My career needs you to record more music with me, Gwen."

Stefani also loves giving fans a glimpse of her cozy ranch life in Oklahoma with Shelton. In June 2023, the "It's My Life" singer posted an Instagram video of herself and Shelton exploring their ranch together.

Stefani revealed in a 2023 interview on TODAY that, during the couple's July 2021 wedding, her tears of happiness were so strong during the ceremony that her mascara didn't stand a chance.

"I do my vows, and I'm literally bawling," she said. "All the makeup came off."

Stefani also said that Shelton's vows made her cry even harder.

"Then he goes, 'I know that you're always on me about not writing songs...'" she added. "So all of a sudden, guitar out of nowhere, he plays me this song he writes me. I'm bawling."

Stefani revealed in a 2022 interview with Access Hollywood that the song that Shelton wrote for her was the most romantic gift she's ever received.

In a 2021 interview with People, Shelton revealed that the song was called "We Can Reach the Stars" (which was ultimately featured in the deluxe version of his album Body Language).

"Gwen and I decided we were going to write our own vows for the wedding, but I decided to surprise her by writing a song instead," he told the outlet. "I reached out to my buddy Craig Wiseman, who is a world-class songwriter, to help me write and structure something that would stand the test of time."

"I'm really proud of 'We Can Reach the Stars' and I'm really honored to be with her," he also said. "That's why we got married in the first place. That's why we wear rings… because we want everyone to know. I'm thrilled to share this song with the world."

Stefani shared a sweet Instagram montage (set to her song "True Babe") for Father's Day 2023 that included photos and videos of Shelton from their wedding day and other fun-filled milestones together. Less than a month later — on their second wedding anniversary — she shared another Instagram Reel of reflective home videos and snapshots that included the happy couple on their wedding day as Shelton lifted Stefani in the air.

Why did Blake Shelton leave The Voice?

In October 2022, Shelton announced that Season 23 of The Voice would be his last, as he wished to spend more time with his family.

In a November 2022 interview with Extra, Stefani opened up about how her husband's departure from the show made her feel.

“I think that Blake – I don’t know, I think he just wants more time, you know what I mean? I don’t know that people realize, if he’s doing two seasons a year, right? In between that, he’s touring. So he actually has two teams at the same time at a certain point, so they overlap," she said.  "So it’s a lot of brain power, it’s a lot of time away from the family, those kinds of things. I think he just got to a point where he just wants time in his ranch, like time to just do the other things that he loves to do.”

"I’m excited for him because we have lives outside of work, and it’s a really good life, it's really fun, and we have so much fun!" she added. "We have Oklahoma, which is something I never knew I needed and wanted, you know? We planted a garden, we do all kinds of fun stuff. So we’re looking forward to doing some of that family stuff together. It's gonna be great."
