Hear Deejay Young’s “Undeniably Insane” Falsetto That Stunned the Coaches

Did the Season 24 Blind Audition standout earn an enviable Four-Chair Turn?

By Benjamin Bullard

Hey, they call it The Voice for a reason. Mere moments into his soaring, falsetto-pitched rendition of Kate Bush's pop classic “This Woman’s Work,” Season 24 Artist Deejay Young already had three of this year’s Coaches swiveling right around in their seats. And as for the fourth? Well, let’s just say Young’s sky-high falsetto range was almost too impressive for Niall Horan.

How to Watch

Watch The Voice Mondays and Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

Confessing afterward that Young’s talent was “undeniably insane,” Horan explained why he remained the lone red-button holdout  —  even after the performance had fellow Coaches John Legend, Gwen Stefani, and Reba McEntire stunned.

For Horan, who’s fresh off coaching The Voice winner Gina Miles to victory in Season 23, falsetto chops like Young’s need a special type of Coach, which is why he sat back in admiration. “Deejay, that was, like, undeniably insane!” he said. “…[But] I have a particular type of voice that I lean toward…never mind what you just did for 90 seconds.”

With three eager Coaches to choose from, Young paid major props to McEntire (whom he’d already singled out as a major influence), and then elected to join Team Legend, calling the multi-platinum star an ideal fit to help hone his own soulful, R&B style.

Legend was obviously stoked at the choice, too: “You have this beautiful ability to combine the masculine and the feminine in a song,” he told Young. “And falsetto is so hard to sing live. The fact that you sang that so beautifully — you have it, and we just need to be here to help you shine your light.”
