The wait for laughs with the Lopez family is almost over. The close-knit crew returns in Season 2 of Lopez vs Lopez with their familiar warmth and humor. Cast members George Lopez, Selenis Leyvaand Al Madrigal spoke to NBC Insider from the set of Rosie’s living about new storylines and the show’s ability to seamlessly tackle more serious topics like sobriety and anxiety.

How to Watch

Watch Lopez vs. Lopez Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock

Madrigal, an actor and comedian, plays George’s best friend, Oscar, on the show. He sees the collaboration between showrunner Debby Wolfe, George, and Mayan Lopez as a key factor in making the show’s tone work so well.

“It starts with the writers,” Madrigal said. “We’re just watching these scripts evolve…where it’s this perfect balance of heart, silliness, and while we’re still talking about some real-life issues.”

George likens the experience of working out the writing and dialogue on Lopez vs Lopez to his first beloved sitcom George Lopez, which is streaming now on Peacock.

“I’m down on the floor working, writing,” George said about the new show, noting moving lines and jokes to different characters helps keep the humor balanced amongst the ensemble cast.

He also finds himself in awe of Mayan (his real daughter) and her work on the show: “Mayan has been incredible," he said.

George, Mayan, and Quinten talk in the kitchen

They started working on the sitcom together two years ago, George said.

“I let her be herself, I let her be an actor,” George said. “I don’t go in the room and tell her how to do stuff, and I think in that, she’s been very independent, and she really shines in Season 2.”

Leyva, known for her roles in Orange Is the New Black and Diary of a Future President, views Rosie's heart as central to show.

“What I love about Rosie is that she’s fire,” Leyva said. “She’s unapologetic and she says what she wants to say, but she’s also the heart. I feel like there is a lot of heart in that character. She loves so much; she’s been able to forgive and make room for George because of the love that she has for Mayan — and still has for George.”

George was raised by his grandmother and loves the relationship between Rosie and her grandson, Chance (Brice Gonzales), he explained.

“He goes over to her house, and she’s always really sweet to him and helping him with his projects, and I don’t think I’ve seen a relationship like that,” George added. “It’s very real and I love it, and he’s respectful of her, like, you don’t have a kid that’s annoying or, you know, brash. He’s hilarious, but also, he’s one of us. Like we—I look at him, I don’t see a kid. I see just an actor.”

Mayan’s boyfriend on the show, Quinten Van Bryan (Matt Shively), is the “outsider” of the group, but his emotions and sincerity make him a special part of the sitcom, according to Madrigal.

“With Quinten and Mayan, that relationship, I think we’ve had this through line of Rosie really wanting them to get married and doesn’t like this living in this house of sin,” Madrigal said, making Leyva laugh.

Madrigal loves what the show does with his character Oscar, too.

“If anyone wants to pull a con, I’m your guy,” Madrigal said.

That said, Leyva was quick to add Oscar’s character also has “so much heart.”

What to expect in Lopez vs Lopez Season 2 for the characters

Leyva teases a new love interest for Rosie will “shake things up” this season.

“I think George definitely has a moment of like, uh oh, wait a minute,” Leyva said. “It’s one of the things, like, when you forget—when somebody takes something that you don’t use and suddenly you’re like wait, I was gonna use that.”
