The Voice's Dan + Shay Reveal Why They Didn't Speak for 4 Months

The Season 25 Coaches opened up to Carson Daly on the Today Show about what led to their rift and reconciliation.

By Jackie Manno

Upcoming Season 25 The Voice Coaches Dan + Shay (Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney) may have a massively successful career as a country pop duo, however, it hasn't always been smooth sailing for the close friends.

How to Watch

Watch the Season 26 premiere of The Voice on Monday, September 23 at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

In 2021, after they won their third Grammy, the musicians hit a rocky patch and didn't speak for several months. In a recent interview on Today, the two cleared the air about what triggered the rift, and how they eventually reconciled.

"You guys came off The Arena Tour, and things were bad. We heard you didn't talk for four months. What was the thing that rekindled this relationship?" The Voice Host and Today co-host Carson Daly inquired.

"Being in a duo is the toughest configuration. We always say, there's two people. Everything's 50/50. When you're in a trio, there's always a tie breaker. When you're in a group, its chaos. But in a duo you have to go out of your way to work on it. Like a marriage. And time gets in the way, and if you're not actively working on it, things can go by the wayside," Smyers responded with wisdom.

However, the musicians have since repaired their relationship, and are back and better than ever, as they are releasing a new album and soon going on tour

Smyers continued: "And we just, we chose that one night. We were like, if we're gonna do this, we owe it to our fans. Dan + Shay is always gonna be a tattoo on somebody's arm, a first dance at somebody's wedding, and we owe it to everybody to give it our best shot. We sat down, we started writing songs, just hanging out like we used to when we first met, and that's where the magic was."

In an interview with ET, Smyers also explained that the reason for this rocky period was them being overwhelmed by the fast-paced nature of their fame, and they needed take a step back and reflect on how to balance their personal and professional lives. Now, they are going ultra strong.

"I can feel the closeness of our relationship and our friendship when I listen back to the music. We are by far, a million times, the closest we've ever been for so many reasons, but because we worked at it. That makes what we're doing now infinitely sustainable. I could do this the rest of my life with you," Smyers said.

This May, it was announced that Dan + Shay will be joining The Voice Season 25 as the first-ever Coaching duo. This won't be their first rodeo on The Voice stage, as they appeared in Season 20 at a Battle Advisor for former Coach Blake Shelton

"Dan + Shay, they’re both great guys," Shelton told Stage Right. "But Shay is one of the funniest human beings I’ve ever been around in my life. So it’s no wonder to me that they went on to be the big stars that they are now.”
