Every Time Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek Have Been Engaged on Chicago P.D.

After multiple attempts at marriage, "Burzek" is finally tying the knot.

By Jessica White

To say the relationship between Chicago P.D.'s Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) is complicated is an understatement. Luckily, fans got to see "Burzek" finally find its footing in Season 11.

How to Watch

Watch Chicago P.D. Wednesdays at 10/9c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

For years, Chi-Hards questioned whether or not the officers would end up together: Burgess and Ruzek have dated several times and even co-parent their daughter Mikayla, but it's taken a while for the couple to truly make it. Burgess and Ruzek had to grow on their own before they could give their best selves to each other — but as of Chicago P.D. Season 10, the couple was back in action and their happy family of three was living together.

Then, after years of back-and-forth, Ruzek and Burgess took their relationship to the next level after a heartwarming (third, and hopefully final) proposal in Season 11, Episode 3 ("Safe Harbor").

"Before, it was such a rocky, tumultuous relationship, they never should have gotten engaged. But because they've been through everything and managed to stay together, it does seem like they've proved their mettle," Squerciati told NBC Insider. "They've been through the fire, they're ready. The bait and switch for Ruzek and Burgess are over. They'll go through stuff but they're together now."

Look back at every time the couple started dreaming of wedding bells.

Chicago Pd Burgess Ruzek Reunion2

When was Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek's first engagement on Chicago P.D.?

Ruzek and Burgess' Chicago P.D. romance has been an obsession among Chi-Hards since the show's debut season. Sure, Ruzek was engaged to another woman at the time, but it didn't stop them from sharing a kiss in Season 1, Episode 10 ("At Least It's Justice"). Ruzek eventually broke off that engagement, and the pair began dating Season 2 of Chicago P.D.

Despite it being a new relationship, Ruzek pretty quickly proposed to Burgess.

in Season 2, Episode 23 ("Born Into Bad News"). Burgess happily accepted, but the couple didn't exactly head straight for the altar.

In Season 3, Burgess realized Ruzek had some serious commitment issues after he refused to meet Burgess' mother. Then, when Ruzek continued to push their wedding date back, she broke off their engagement in Season 3, Episode 12 ("Looking Out for Stateville").

“You don’t want to be on the hook," Burgess told him. "I am letting you off.”

When was Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek's second engagement on Chicago P.D.?

After their ill-fated attempt at marriage in Season 3, Ruzek and Burgess both dated other people, but ended up hooking up again off-screen in Season 7. That resulted in Burgess getting pregnant, after which the pair agreeing to co-parent their unborn child.

The pregnancy inspired Ruzek to propose to Burgess for the second time in Season 7, Episode 11 ("43rd and Normal").

"I think maybe we should get married,” Ruzek told her. “I mean, I know I screwed up last time, but things are different now. I’m different now.”

Burgess politely declined.

“I think it’s a really bad idea,” she confessed.

Burgess ultimately suffered a miscarriage in the line of duty, but Ruzek was there to offer his support during every step of her recovery.

After Burgess adopted a young girl named Mikayla in Season 8, Burgess and Ruzek became co-parents despite still not being in a relationship.

How did Adam Ruzek propose to Kim Burgess for the third and final time on Chicago P.D.?

In Season 10, Burgess agreed to allow Ruzek to attend therapy sessions with her, and the two ultimately came clean that they both wanted more from their relationship but were afraid to admit it.

Following their therapy sessions, the couple hooked up again and, by the end of Season 10, Burgess and Ruzek were back together and agreed that something felt "different" about their latest attempt a relationship.

Ruzek proposed to Burgess for the third — and hopefully final — time in Chicago P.D. Season 11, Episode 3 ("Safe Harbor"). After coming home after a grueling case to find Ruzek asleep on the couch with Mikayla, Burgess opened up about how much she cared for their family.

"Promise me we'll keep fighting for this," Burgess pleaded. "Because I need this, Adam. I need this family."

"Well, you know I will," Ruzek promised.

"Yeah?"

"Yeah," Ruzek said, heading for his tableside drawer. "Yeah, yeah. I'll keep fighting for it for the rest of my life."

"That’s nice," Burgess said, as Ruzek grabbed something that looked like a diamond ring.

"I was gonna do a whole thing here, but um… this seems better," Ruzek said, presenting Burgess with the ring. "Let's get married. Let’s make it forever."

"Third time's a charm, huh?" Burgess teased.

Ruzek tenderly slipped the ring on her finger.

"Does that feel good?" Ruzek asked.

"It’s perfect," Burgess told him before they shared a heartwarming kiss.
