Pete Davidson Is "Just Pete" in SNL's Barbie Musical Sketch

Forget Kenergy—Davidson asks if you can feel the "BDEnergy" in the amazing Saturday Night Live parody based on Ryan Gosling's big number.

By Samantha Vincenty

Comedian Pete Davidson is often the first to joke about how his personal life can grab as many—or at times, more—headlines as his standup and acting roles do. And in the October 14 Saturday Night Live premiere, Davidson explored his feelings about it in "I'm Just Pete," a perfectly-executed parody of Ryan Gosling's big number in Greta Gerwig's 2023 Barbie movie.

How to Watch

Watch Saturday Night Live Saturdays at 11:30/10:30c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

As the pretaped sketch begins, Davidson is about to present an adorable cake to the SNL cast when he overhears cast members Punkie Johnson and Andrew Dismukes making fun of his career. Then, capturing a cultural sensation that SNL missed in its summer hiatus (Barbie fever), a suddenly shirtless, bleach-blonde Davidson bursts into an alternate version of the original Barbie tune with new lyrics.

"No one cares about the work I do, I made a show with Joe Pesci too, and no one streamed it but my mom," Davidson sings self-deprecatingly, before going on to call out the time he bought an old Staten Island ferry with Colin Jost

"'Cuz I'm just Pete—anyone else would be a three, but I guess I'm hot for dudes in comedy, 'cause it's an ugly industry," Davidson belts with all his might.

As he rolls around in a hot-pink garbage pile, Davidson calls forth the other Petes: "Weekend Update" Pete (Mikey Day), who resembles Colin Jost, Met Gala Pete (Bowen Yang), and Black Pete (Devon Walker).

In the big breakdown, the black-sweatshirt-clad Petes dance to Davidson's lyric, "Can you feel that famous BD-Energy?" as his fictional dating exploits with Flo from Progressive are revealed.

What are the original lyrics to "I'm Just Ken?"

Read the lyrics to the brilliant Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt-penned Barbie song below.

Doesn't seem to matter what I do
I'm always number two
No one knows how hard I tried, oh-oh, I
I have feelings that I can't explain
They're drivin' me insane
All my life been so polite
But I'll sleep alone tonight

'Cause I'm just Ken
Anywhere else I'd be a ten
Is it my destiny to live and die a life of blonde fragility?
I'm just Ken
Where I see love, she sees a friend
What will it take for her to see the man behind the tan and fight for me?

You can, Ken
You can, Ken
You can, Ken

I wanna know what's there to love
To feel the real thing
Is it a crime? Am I not hot when I'm in my feelings?
And is my moment finally here or am I dreaming?
I'm no dreamer

Ken, Ken, Ken
Can you feel the Ken-energy?
Feels so real, I guarantee
Can you feel the Ken-energy?
Feels so real, I guarantee
Ken
We are, you are, we are

I'm just Ken
Anywhere else I'd be a ten
Is it my destiny to live and die a life of blonde fragility?
I'm just Ken
Where I see love, she sees a friend
What will it take for her to see the man behind the tan and fight for me?

I'm just Ken and I'm enough
And I'm great at doing stuff
So, hey, check me out, yeah, I'm just Ken
My name's Ken and so am I
Put that manly hand in mine
So, hey, well, check me out, I'm just Ken
Baby, I'm just Ken (Nobody else, nobody else)
