How to Watch

Watch the Season 19 premiere of America’s Got Talent Tuesday, May 28 at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock

On July 27, the America's Got Talent Season 11 Winner uploaded a video of her singing "Wake Up Alone" by Amy Winehouse. In the clip, VanderWaal used a breathy, vulnerable tone while she gently crooned the harrowing lyrics and strummed her guitar.

VanderWaal has been on a roll singing deep, emotional songs lately, as she also gave her fans a sneak peek of her original tune "Boyfriends" earlier this month. In the teaser, she filmed herself in black and white while using a soft tone and playing a keyboard.

What to know about "Wake Up Alone" by Amy Winehouse

As the eighth track off of Winehouse's critically acclaimed 2006 album Back to Black, the gut-wrenching lyrics to "Wake Up Alone" tell the story of a woman feeling empty after being separated from her significant other. "She sang about the ache of the body, the need for emotion," The Guardian wrote in 2011 shortly after Winehouse's death in July of that year.

The lyrics to "Wake Up Alone" by Amy Winehouse

It's okay in the day, I'm staying busy
Tied up enough so I don't have to wonder where is he
Got so sick of crying, so just lately
When I catch myself, I do a 180
I stay up, clean the house, at least I'm not drinking
Run around just so I don't have to think about thinking

That silent sense of content that everyone gets
Just disappears soon as the sun sets

He's fierce in my dreams, seizes my guts
He floods me with dread
Soaked in soul, he swims in my eyes by the bed
Pour myself over him, moon spilling in
And I wake up alone

If I was my heart I'd rather be restless
The second I stop the sleep catches up and I'm breathless
As this ache in my chest, as my day is done now
The dark covers me and I cannot run now
My blood running cold, I stand before him
It's all I can do to assure him

When he comes to me, I drip for him tonight
Drowned in me, we bathe under blue light

His face in my dreams seizes my guts
He floods me with dread
Soaked in soul, he swims in my eyes by the bed
Pour myself over him, moon spilling in
And I wake up alone
And I wake up alone
And I wake up alone
And I wake up alone
