The Second Trailer for Will Ferrell, Jamie Foxx Comedy Strays Is Here — and It's Doggone Crazy

Will Ferrell as Reggie (an abandoned border terrier) runs with the big dogs in Strays, also starring Jamie Foxx as a tough Boston terrier.

Fans of Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx, get your tails wagging: We have a second official trailer for Strays. Have you ever wondered what your dog really thinks? Strays is a rollicking movie that doesn’t pretend to be anything other than what it is — a comedy about wisecracking dogs who believe owners are for suckers.

In the new trailer, Reggie (Will Ferrell) — a naïve, good-natured border terrier — wanders into a dark alleyway after his horrible human owner, Doug (Will Forte), abandons him. Confused and in serious denial about his situation, Reggie encounters some foul-mouthed street dogs and greets them with a cheery, “Hi there, big dogs, I’m trying to get home.”

Intercepting Reggie along the way is Bug (Jamie Foxx), a small but mighty Boston Terrier who takes Reggie under his wing, showing him the ropes of street life. When Reggie tells him, “I’m lost,” Bug sets him straight, saying, “You’re a stray now! You can do anything you want.”

Bug helps Reggie realize he had a toxic relationship with Doug, his bad human. Gathering up Bug’s pack of pals — Maggie (Isla Fischer), a smart Australian shepherd who was overshadowed by a new puppy at home, and Hunter (Randall Park), a great dane who is burnt out as an emotional support animal — they embark on a quest to exact revenge. The plan is to bite off something Doug will dearly miss (ahem, it’s not his foot).

A whirlwind of wild experiences ensues, from lapping up beer in a city alleyway to frolicking with the pack in a magic mushroom patch deep in the woods (one dog hallucinates that he has freaky human hands). This is a movie produced by the people behind Cocaine Bear, after all!

In this new trailer, we learn Reggie has more grit than we think. He shows some real cajones when he saves Bug from a bird of prey in a wooded field away from the city. He clamps onto Reggie’s hind paws with his teeth, yelling, “Hold on, buddy,” as the giant bird flies both dogs through the air to their supposed doom. A cameo appearance by Dennis Quaid (playing himself) underscores the sheer absurdness of the scene. As he spots the spectacle through binoculars, he says, “That is the craziest thing I have ever seen. And I’m Dennis Quaid, and Dennis Quaid has seen some sh-t.”

The powerhouse supporting cast brings serious acting chops. It includes Grammy winner Josh Gad (Beauty and the Beast), Harvey Guillén (Puss in Boots: The Last Wish), Emmy nominee Rob Riggle (The Hangover), Brett Gelman (Stranger Things), Jamie Demetriou (The Afterparty), and Emmy nominee Sofia Vergara (Modern Family).

Directed by Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) and written by Dan Perrault (Players, American Vandal), the R-rated live-action film touches on pro-pet themes of loyalty, friendship, and resilience (not to mention couch-humping).

Strays premieres in theaters on August 18.
