Watch Josh Brolin's Saturday Night Live Monologue and Sketches from March 9

After stripping down to take a cold plunge in his monologue, Dune: Part Two's Brolin got gloriously silly in an episode that also featured Ariana Grande in sketches.

By Samantha Vincenty

Dune: Part Two actor Josh Brolin hosted Saturday Night Live for his third time on March 9; as the actor noted, "it's been a good 12 years" since his last visit. Like Adam Driver, Emma Stone, and Ryan Gosling, Brolin fully commits to bringing his Academy Award-nominated acting skills to every SNL sketch he appears in, whether he's fretting over a shrimp tower or co-starring with musical guest Ariana Grande in a sketch about chronic people-pleasers.

How to Watch

Watch Saturday Night Live Saturdays at 11:30/10:30c on NBC and Peacock, streaming next day on Peacock.

Brolin's self confidence also led him to do two things during his monologue that would be the stuff of anxiety dreams for most people. First, Brolin recited the "apparently super creepy poem" he wrote about his Dune co-star (and fellow Season 49 HostTimothée Chalamet—and yes, he really did do that: "Your face is etched by adolescence. Your cheekbones jut toward what are youth eyes that slide down a prominent nose, and onto lips of a certain poetry." This moved Brolin to share one he'd written about Kenan Thompson, praising his "ageless face" and "sugar cookie cheeks."

But that was no match for Brolin's big finish during his monologue, because next, he stripped down to his underwear to take a cold plunge onstage.

"You know, I've been doing cold plunges for 20 years, right? And the only thing I can compare to this show to is that," he said. "Hosting is like jumping into an ice bath, you know. Scary, it's exhilarating, your penis is in your stomach. There's just no way to prepare for it—so what you got to do is just jump right in. Surrender to the discomfort."

Brolin submerged himself, visibly shocked by the temperature, as he yelled an iconic line from his Marvel villain, Thanos: "I am inevitable!"

Brolin's moment was in fact the second jaw-dropper of the evening, as Scarlett Johansson appeared in the cold open to parody Alabama Senator Katie Britt's viral State of the Union rebuttal. And musical guest Ariana Grande, herself a previous Host, joined for two hilarious sketches, including a musical gem co-starring her Wicked castmate Bowen Yang.

State of the Union Cold Open: Katie Britt

State of the Union Cold Open

When the March 9 cold open began with a parody of Biden's March State of the Union speech, it seemed we wouldn't get the Katie Britt sketch so many had hoped for on social media. Not to worry: Scarlett Johansson soon appeared in a set like Britt's kitchen, wearing the same green shirt and cross, to put in an over-the-top performance very similar to the Senator's.

Bank Robbery

Bank Robbery

When two bank robbers (Devon Walker and James Austin Johnson) hold up a bank, they never planned for the strange couple (Brolin and Heidi Gardner) of hostages who just opened up their marriage.

People Pleaser Support Group

People Pleaser Support Group

Everyone, including Ariana Grande, is terrified of conflict in a sketch that feels like an SNL throwback in the very best way.

Moulin Rouge

Moulin Rouge

Ariana Grande and Bowen Yang's Moulin Rouge-style song montage is Theater Kid heaven, and makes us so excited for Wicked Part One.

Airplane Song

Airplane Song

Andrew Dismukes leads this pretaped sketch about watching someone else’s screen on a flight (we've all done it at some point!). The inexplicable shift into 1980s-style wigs truly makes it.

Wine and Cheese Night

Wine and Cheese Night

Like so many wine and cheese parties, this one ends in a knife fight.

Give yourself over to the glory of...the shrimp tower. Brolin matches Sarah Sherman's 110 percent commitment to strangeness in this pretaped sketch.
