"Roman emperor-level shade," recalled the Barbie actor.

Kids say the darndest things, even when it comes to the most famous art in the world.

How to Watch

Watch The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on NBC weeknights at 11:35/10:35c and next day on Peacock

When Ryan Gosling was on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in July 2022, he had just wrapped filming on the Barbie movie, and images from their Venice Beach shoot—which revealed Gosling and Margot Robbie rollerblading in wild day-glo outfits—had just gone viral.

Aside from photos of Robbie and Gosling filming on Venice Beach, one of the only official images from Barbie at the time was of Gosling as Ken, with platinum blond hair, shirtless and wearing a denim vest. "It officially broke the internet," said Host Jimmy Fallon, showing the now-iconic image.

"Well, you know, the internet has been trying to break me for years. So they gave me no other choice," joked Gosling. "I was surprised how some people were clutching their pearls about my Ken as though they ever thought about Ken for a second before this. They never played with Ken. Nobody plays with Ken," he continued, asking Fallon if he ever played with Barbie's boyfriend as a kid.

"It was available. He stayed in the toybox," replied Fallon.

"He's an accessory, and not even one of the cool ones," said the actor. In the time since, Ken's grown more beloved thanks to director Greta Gerwig's blockbuster movie. Gosling's performance earned him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination, and he's set to perform Best Original Song nominee "I'm Just Ken" at the Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday, March 10.

During their chat, Gosling and Host Fallon bonded over a few things they had in common.

Besides both working in the entertainment industry, Fallon and Gosling also have something else in common. They both have two daughters, for one, who are turning into some tough critics.

As Fallon revealed during the interview, his kids have entered the age where they aren't such an easy audience when it comes to his jokes.

"My girls are a little bit starting to not laugh at every joke that I tell," The Tonight Show Host explained. "They used to be my number one fan, I used to do anything. Now they just sometimes don't react. I get the eye roll or something."

Ryan Gosling's Daughter Had a Harsh Review of the Louvre

Gosling has two daughters, Esmeralda Amada, 9, and Amada Lee, 7, with his partner, actress Eva Mendes.

Commiserating with Fallon, Gosling revealed that while filming in France, he took his younger daughter to the Louvre, and she had a less than enthusiastic review of the world-famous museum.

"We got to work in France, and so we went to the Louvre. We saw Winged Victory [of Samothrace], we saw Venus de Milo. We're standing in front of the Mona Lisa, and she turns around and she goes this museum? Thumbs down," recalled Gosling, imitating his daughter giving thumbs down with a frown on his face.

"And I said, 'Why?' She went, 'Because it is not good,'" said Gosling. "Roman emperor-level shade."

Hopefully Gosling's daughters weren't such harsh critics when it came to his Oscar-nominated portrayal of Ken in Barbie.
