Is The Irrational Returning with New Episodes? Where the Series Left Off

Are Alec and Marisa moving on after divorcing? New episodes of The Irrational might shed some light on new love interests.

By Caitlin Schunn

Jesse L. Martin teased an unfinished love story for his character before the series premiere of The Irrational, and that story continued to play out with a cliffhanger by the end of Episode 7 of the new NBC drama. Martin, who portrays behavioral science professor Alec Mercer, spoke of the tension between Alec and his soon-to-be-ex-wife, Marisa, played by Maahra Hill, and Hill agreed.

“There’s a special connection, a certain, ‘something words can’t describe’ between the two of them,” Hill told NBC Insider, in an interview conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

But after Alec went on his first date since his divorce in Episode 7, it left a mystery as to what’s to come for Alec and Marisa on the show.

Is Alec Mercer moving on from his ex Marisa on The Irrational?

Alec first met Rose Dinshaw, played by Karen David, when she helped with a complex kidnapping case in Episode 4. Sparks seemed to fly between the two throughout the case.

“Ever consider that you’re a handsome and intelligent man and that my flirting has nothing to do with the case?” Rose asked Alec during the episode.

But the tension between Marisa and Rose was clear from the start.

“I am not a fan of corporate fixers like Rose,” Marisa said during the episode. “They are almost always former bureau or police who couldn’t hack it, or decided to cash out, or both.”

Meanwhile, Marisa also seemed to be moving on with fellow FBI agent Jace, portrayed by Brian King.

Flash forward to Episode 7, where Alec and Rose are going on their first date. Their date turns from hours to days as they work to solve a counterfeit art case for one of Rose’s clients that turns into a murder investigation.

Meanwhile, Marisa and Alec’s sister, Kylie, played by Travina Springer, went for dinner together, where each lamented they’d missed the other since Marisa filed for divorce from Alec. Eventually, Kylie accused Marisa of denying her feelings for Alec. After an argument, Marisa admitted Kyle was right.

“I wasn’t being honest with you, which is stupid, because we always got along, because we weren’t afraid to be honest with each other,” Marisa said to Kylie.

But Kylie also admitted she’d been harboring anger at Marisa.

“I’m mad, Marisa,” Kylie said. “Without warning — just poof. You just left us.”

But Marisa clarified she still wanted a relationship with Kylie, while indicating she was in fact moving on from Alec.

“I left my marriage. I didn’t leave you,” Marisa said. “I love Alec. I will always love Alec. But that’s not the same as being married to him. I need to find out who I am without him.”

Alec and Rose also became closer while solving the art case.

“I’d say our date yielded a lot of data. How well we work as a team, how much you like playing bad cop,” Alec joked to Rose as they held hands over coffee. “There’s someone very real in there, and I would very much like to see her again.”

But just when it seemed like a happy ending, Rose got a text from a client and announced she was heading to Paris to handle it.

“But when I get back, we should do this again,” Rose said, giving Alec a kiss on the cheek before leaving.
