Breaking Down Dr. Ethan Choi's Emotional Chicago Med Exit

We'll miss you, Ethan and April!

Choi and April’s Patient Is AWOL | NBC’s Chicago Med

The midseason finale of Chicago Med was a rewarding watch, especially for those excited about the wedding between Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) and April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta).

How to Watch

Watch Chicago Med Wednesdays at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

While Chexton fans have been waiting with bated breath to see Ethan and April finally tie the knot, the episode also marked the final appearance of Tee as the longtime ER doctor and One Chicago fan favorite. He and April will be exploring a new life outside of Gaffney Medical Center, but they actually won't be too far from the action, after all.

Episode 9, "This Could Be the Start of Something New," begins with Ethan flagging down Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson), who's on her way to pick up her dress for Ethan's wedding the next day. "Ms. Goodwin!" Choi calls out, running to catch up with Sharon as she heads to her car.

"What's on your mind?" she asks him.

"Well, uh, April and I have always talked about bringing healthcare to underserved communities," Ethan reminds her. "And as you know, so many folks use our ED for their primary care, and we'd like to get to them before they need to do that. One way we thought would be to have a mobile clinic."

"That's a great idea!" Sharon exclaims.

"Yeah, I got a small inheritance from my dad, and April saved up some money, so we bought a mobile eye clinic we're refitting for general care," Ethan reveals.

"Oh, and this is something you could do part-time?" Sharon asks.

"Full-time, Ms. Goodwin," Ethan concludes. "After our honeymoon, we'd like to start going out, treating people."

It takes Sharon a moment to process what Ethan is telling her, but the news slowly seeps in as she smiles. "Dr. Choi, are you giving me notice?" she asks.

"Yes, m'am," Ethan says. "Believe me. This wasn't an easy decision."

"Is your plan to put my ED out of business?" Sharon teases.

"I'm certainly going to try," Ethan beams.

Ethan's last day in the ED turns out to be a stressful shift when April's father is admitted for chest pains that they worry might turn into a heart attack. It's not exactly great timing, considering Ethan and April are expected to walk down the wedding aisle the next day. In a moment of pre-wedding panic, April pulls Ethan to the side and asks him if they should postpone the wedding due to her dad's condition.

April admits she's nervous about the wedding herself, but she and Ethan are able to have a mature conversation about their concerns. Eventually, Ethan deduces that April's father's condition is treatable with a simple surgery, and they can wait until after the wedding to schedule the procedure. At the end of the day, everything is set in motion for the two lovebirds to get hitched...without a hitch!

Despite the chaotic time in the ER just a day beforehand, Ethan and April end up getting the fairytale wedding Chicago Med fans have been rooting for since they began secretly dating in Season 3. Opting for a beautiful church ceremony, April and Ethan were surrounded by their Chicago Medical Center loved ones as they shared their vows and finally said, "I do."

The wedding was perfect in every way, the ideal send-off for two of Chicago Med's most beloved characters. Ethan and April will be sorely missed, but it's great to see the doctors take the next big step together while helping those who need it most in their city.

Watch Chicago Med Wednesdays at 8/7c on NBC and the next day on Peacock.
