Flashback: When Greta Gerwig Starred in Late Night’s “Second Chance Theatre"

Watch the Barbie director and Jason Sudeikis star in SNL sketches that never made it to air.

By Samantha Vincenty

As most fans of Late Night with Seth Meyers know, Seth Meyers worked on Saturday Night Live from 2001 to 2014 as a writer and cast member. In the years since Meyers first moved from Studio 8H to Studio 8G to host Late Night, many former SNL collaborators-turned-friends have paid a visit to the show.

How to Watch

Watch Late Night with Seth Meyers on NBC weeknights at 12:35/11:35c and next day on Peacock.

That SNL-to-Late-Night pipeline shines brightly on "Second Chance Theatre," a recurring segment that gives SNL alums the chance to stage a sketch they'd written for the show that never made it to air. This makes for a lot of never-before-heard SNL lore and fun cameos — and Late Night celebrity guests get in on the action as co-stars, too.

You might've missed these "Second Chance Theatre" gems the first time around—including a 2016 sketch that features Barbie director Greta Gerwig as Andy Samberg's exasperated co-worker, and another co-starring Jason Sudeikis and his daughters.

"Juggling Flyer" starring Jason Sudeikis

In this revived sketch from 2014, Jason Sudeikis plays a hot-headed juggler who aims to give coffee shop patrons some Ted Lasso-style inspiration...and some juggling lessons. It does not go well.

Late Night bandleader Fred Armisen and fellow SNL alum Mike O'Brien co-star, alongside show writers Michelle Wolf and John Lutz.

"Wanna Come With?" starring Andy Samberg, Greta Gerwig and Kenan Thompson

In the opening of this 2016 segment, Meyers explains that "some [SNL sketches] are cut unfairly, and some — like tonight's — were cut for cause."

The premise is simple, and relentlessly silly: At a work-related happy hour, an inebriated office worker (Andy Samberg) repeatedly asks anyone, and everyone, to accompany him to the bathroom.

Greta Gerwig shows up as Susan, a co-worker who does NOT want to "come with," while Meyers plays Samberg's boss (and breaks into laughter along with Samberg mid-sketch). It also co-stars Kenan Thompson and Late Night writer Amber Ruffin, Host of The Amber Ruffin Show on Peacock.

"Unicorn" starring Mike O'Brien

Mike O'Brien and Jason Sudeikis return to co-star in a sketch that was nixed not once but twice on Saturday Night Live, as O'Brien later told Meyers.

Filmed in separate backyards in 2020, it features the "Second Chance Children's Theatre Company," a.k.a. O'Brien and Sudeikis' adorable kids.
