Are Fairies the Secret to Happiness? Rainn Wilson Sells Fallon on Peacock Series Geography of Bliss

For a guy most people know as Dwight from The Office, Rainn Wilson has a lot to say on the subject of happiness.

By Caitlin Busch

The Office alum Rainn Wilson is on a mission. No, not to avoid Jim's latest prank or be the greatest salesman in Dunder Mifflin history, but to find the secrets to happiness.

How to Watch

Watch The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on NBC weeknights at 11:35/10:35c and next day on Peacock

Wilson appeared as a guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday evening to promote two upcoming passion projects: His book, Soul Boom: Why We Need a Spiritual Revolution, and his new Peacock original docuseries, Rainn Wilson and the Geography of Bliss.

And for the record, Wilson is aware of how this looks to fans who only know him from The Office.

"Why the hell is the guy who played Dwight writing a book on spirituality?" Wilson joked to Fallon. "I do have to admit that I do sort of have a secret inner Oprah and I love topics of spirituality and mysticism and religion and I think they're really important topics and it's a crucial time for us to dive into some big, spiritual ideas. The world is hurting and spiritual tools are there for our personal and social transformation and it's an important conversation."

Wilson went on to note that it's not just about straight-up religion: He's tackling some big questions here. What's the meaning of life? What's the meaning of the soul, of suffering, of "sacredness"? It's all in order to "coax some big questions out of people."

His new series, Rainn Wilson and the Geography of Bliss, will also ask some deceptively big questions. As he explained to Fallon, while there are plenty of celebrities traveling the world looking for the best food, Wilson's setting out in this Peacock original series looking for happiness.

Aww!

In the above video, you'll see a clip of Wilson's time in Iceland where he seems to be prepping to take an icy dip. His guide explains to him that while he might feel miserable right now — all Wilson wants is to be cozied up with a nice hot chocolate — he simply needs to recontextualize his discomfort.

Rainn Wilson and the Geography of Bliss is actually based on a New York Times Bestseller, The Geography of Bliss: One Grump's Search for the Happiest Places in the World by Eric Weiner. And while Wilson's beloved character from The Office, Dwight Schrute, could often be a bit of a grump, Wilson is anything but in this new docuseries. His mission to find happiness is at the forefront.

As Wilson explained to Fallon, the series sees him travel to Iceland, Ghana, Bulgaria, and more searching for the secrets to a well-lived (read: happy) life. And every culture seems to have a different answer. For example, he said, in Iceland, not a lot of people would count themselves as religious, but they're some of the happiest people in the world and "80 percent" of the population believes in fairies. Maybe they're on to something!

If you want to know more, you'll have to tune in to Rainn Wilson and the Geography of Bliss when it premieres on Peacock on May 18.

And while you wait, stream every episode of The Office now on Peacock.
