6 Questions We Have Going Into New Amsterdam's Final Season

Three breakups was a little too much for us to take.

Sharpe Leaves Max Waiting | NBC’s New Amsterdam

New Amsterdam's Season 4 finale dealt us a category 4 hurricane, carbon monoxide poisoning, a runaway bride, and three breakups. So needless to say, there are a lot of cliffhangers headed into the medical drama's fifth and final season.

Thankfully, Tyler Labine (Iggy) says our answers are right around the corner. "So every little thing, every little thread we're pulling out of the end of this season, none of that is going to be throwaway, none of it is going to just disappear or be there for the sake of being there," the actor told CinemaBlend. "This is all leading into our next and final season arc."

But seeing as Season 5 doesn't premiere until Tuesday, September 20 at 10/9c on NBC, we're still thinking about that finale—and we have a lot of questions. Below, everything that will be at the top of our minds come New Amsterdam's fall premiere.

How will Max handle being left at the altar?

Ryan Eggold as Dr. Max Goodwin in 'New Amsterdam

After a literal whirlwind of an episode that saw the doctors grapple with a category 4 storm that hit New York, Max was finally ready to marry Helen, who was supposedly on her way from London. But after all of their friends pulled together the perfect New Amsterdam rooftop wedding, he got a tearful phone call at the altar. “She’s not coming," he said.

So, the ultimate question for Max (Ryan Eggold) going into Season 5: What will he do without Helen—and what made her call off the wedding? Seeing him find those answers is sure to be an emotional rollercoaster.

Are Iggy and Martin over for good?

Fresh off an intense argument with Martin—Iggy tells him he's attracted to "broken birds," and Martin says Iggy alway plays the victim—Iggy is charged with leading New Amsterdam through the intense storm. He troubleshoots a power outage, smashed ICU windows, and people getting carbon monoxide poisoning in the stairwell. After all of that, Iggy is reunited with Martin, only to tell his husband, “I can’t be who I want to be with you.” This harsh confession leads Martin to kick Iggy out of their home.

So, are Iggy and Martin headed for a permanent split, or is this just a bump in the road?

What will Reynolds' family look like?

Throughout Season 4, Reynolds (Jocko Sims) was forced to face some major life developments. As it turned out, he is the biological father of Malvo's baby. But there's the added factor that Malvo is in an open marriage with Baptiste and the couple is planning to leave New York. So, how much will Reynolds be present in his child's life?

In the finale, Reynolds worked up the courage to confront the father who abandoned him. But the storm puts his plans on the back burner, trapping him in his father's apartment building and forcing him to perform a medical emergency on a resident. By the end of their ordeal, his father deflects Reynolds' questions but leaves a door open for their relationship by asking for recommendations for a shoulder doctor. Hopefully, in Season 5, we'll see Reynolds works towards solidifying his version of a family as he wraps up loose ends with Malvo, their child, and his absent father.

Is there a future for Bloom and Leyla?

Season 4 saw Bloom (Janet Montgomery) and Leyla (Shiva Kalaiselvan)'s second breakup. In a somewhat selfless decision, Bloom says their relationship had become all about money and was preventing them from being happy. (If you remember, earlier in Season 4, they split because Leyla found out Bloom basically paid for her spot in the residency program). Bloom says Leyla can stay at her apartment until she gets her visa, but they won't be there together.

Since the couple already went their separate ways once, it seems like this could be the final straw for the two. But this is New Amsterdam, after all, and you never know what could happen next.

What's next for Wilder?

Sandra Mae Frank as Dr. Elizabeth Wilder in New Amsterdam

New Amsterdam fans will know that Sandra Mae Frank (Elizabeth Wilder) has officially been upped to a series regular for Season 5, meaning we'll see much more of the oncology chief, in addition to seeing her relationships with the fellow doctors unfold. What could this mean? We'll just have to wait and see.

Who will be New Amsterdam's medical director?

With Veronica Fuentes officially ousted as the hospital's medical director in Season 4, Max's former beloved job (which he gave up to move with Helen to London) is now open. But now that he's returned to New York, his future with Helen is no more, and New Amsterdam is the only place he can practice medicine, does that mean he'll retake his old post? Or will the position fall to another doctor? Yet another cliffhanger we're itching to be resolved.

Season 4 of New Amsterdam is now streaming on Peacock.
