Tom Ball Made Elton John's "I'm Still Standing" So Emotional

His slower version is actually really good.

By Elizabeth Logan

Once you've heard Tom Ball sing "I'm Still Standing," you'll never think of the Elton John hit the same way again. Ball, who won Britain's Got Talent in 2022 and was an America's Got Talent: All-Stars finalist in 2023, recorded an unfussy performance of the song alongside pianist Rob Louden, and he put so much emotion into it.

As recorded by John, "I'm Still Standing" is an upbeat anthem about making it through challenges without falling apart. But Ball's version brings out a more somber and inspirational aspect of the song, and his voice has never sounded stronger.

The commenters agree. "Sorry, Elton. Prefer Tom's rendition!" wrote one fan. "Wowwwww is right ! Wait till EJ hears that version !! 🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍" added another.

What to know about "I'm Still Standing" by Elton John

Elton John composed the music, with longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin penning all the lyrics.

The song was the second single off of John's 1983 album Too Low for Zero, his comeback project after a string of poorly received albums. Lyrically, the song is a kiss-off to a former lover, but since it served as much-needed proof of the musician's continued relevance, it's also a paean to resilience in all forms.

"I think people see it as an anthem based on Elton's strong sense of survival in the face of adversity. Which, believe me, is perfectly fine by me," said Taupin, according to Smooth Radio.
