Why Rudi’s “Powerful” Voice Was Compared to “Climbing a Mountain” During the Battles

This particular Battle featured a song that's never been heard on The Voice before!

By Josh Weiss

The Voice Season 24 Battles continued to chug along Monday evening as Team Gwen contestants Rudi and Joslynn Rose took control of the stage to perform "My Immortal" by Evanescence. Fun fact for all you Voice-Heads out there: This is the first time the song has ever been featured on the show.

How to Watch

Watch The Voice Mondays and Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

"I love both of them," Stefani said of her mentees. "I think they really compliment each other. I feel like Joslynn's a little more alternative pop and Rudi is a little more R&B pop. They're quite different, but they're both equally as gifted."

As you may recall, the 16-year-old Joslynn nabbed a 3-Chair Turn (Stefani, returning champ Niall Horan, and first-time Coach Reba McEntire) with a cover of "Arcade" by Duncan Laurence. The 28-year-old Rudi, meanwhile, attained a coveted 4-Chair turnaround via Lesley Gore's "You Don't Own Me." Niall blocked John Legend over the Blind Audition, but the action ultimately proved useless when Rudi chose to join Team Gwen.

Both Legend and McEntire threw their support behind Rudi once the Battle ended, praising her vocal abilities as "powerful" and "wonderful."

While Horan didn't choose a specific singer, he pretty much showed a preference for Rudi by hailing her performance as being near-perfect. "It felt like you were climbing a mountain the whole way through the song and it just kept going and going and going," he gushed. "It was such an impressive sing."

It is no surprise, therefore, that Stefani ended up choosing Rudi as the winner of this particular Battle and the one who will move on to 3-Way Knockouts. "Rudi and Joslynn, that was a tough one," the Coach explained. "Rudi knows when to do a little trick and when not to. She is very tasteful with the way she uses her voice. I had to go with Rudi because I just think she's ready for what's to come in the competition."

"I am so grateful to Gwen," added Rudi. "I feel like we're friends already. I don't know if that's just me, but she's so personable and I'm just very lucky to have her on my side in this journey."

None of the Coaches stole Joslynn to their side, but given the fact that she's so young and talented, we have a feeling she'll be back on that stage again soon. What's more: Joslynn took the news of her elimination in stride, thanking Stefani for a chance to make it this far into the competition.

"You've been such an encouragement to me," she concluded. "I'm just so thankful for this opportunity that I even got be here."
