Hear the “Unexpected,” “Rare" High Notes That Made John Legend Steal Brandon Montel

John Legend always said he wanted to steal Brandon Montel. On Monday night (November 6), he finally got his chance.

By Matthew Jackson

Sometimes on The Voice, a Coach calls their shot and keeps an eye on a vocalist throughout the competition, waiting for their moment to exercise their Steal power. That's exactly what happened after John Legend heard the 4-Chair Turn audition from singer Brandon Montel. Legend clearly wanted Montel badly, only to be blocked by Coach Reba McEntire, which ultimately led to Montel moving over to Team Gwen Stefani.

How to Watch

Watch the Season 26 premiere of The Voice on Monday, September 23 at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

Well, this week on The Voice, Legend finally got his shot at redemption.

The Battle that made John Legend steal Brandon Montel

Back during the auditions, after he was blocked from recruiting Montel to his team, Legend said "If there's a Steal opportunity, I will be first in line," and he made good on that promise following an absolute knockout battle between Montel and Kara Tenae Monday night.

The two soulful young singers dueted Brandy's R&B classic "Have You Ever?" and ultimately delivered what Coach Niall Horan called "the best" showcase of "technical" singers the show's seen so far this season.

When the Battle ended, closing out Season 24's Battle rounds, Legend was already focusing in on Brandon, praising the singer's "rare" voice and spectacular showcase of high notes that no one saw coming.

"Brandon, you would hit some of those high notes and I was looking at Kara some of the time and expecting that it was coming out of her," Legend said. "And then I was like 'Oh, no, that's Brandon singing!' Your higher register is so beautiful."

The two singers were so good that Stefani was thoroughly "messed up," taking an extremely long time to decide who won the battle before ultimately choosing Tenae, stressing all the while that she still loved Montel and his voice. Montel returned that love, but there was no time to say anything else, because Legend had already hit his Steal button.

"Brandon's such a great vocalist," Legend said after exercising his Steal. "There's no one that sings like him in this competition, and I had to bring Brandon to Team Legend. I didn't even get a chance because Reba blocked me. He was a 4-Chair Turn, and you shouldn't be going home, man."

Now, after calling his Steal shot earlier in the season, Legend finally has Montel on his team. All that's left is to see how far they can go together.
