Cecily Strong's Boyfriend "Accidentally" Ruined His Proposal Plans

Seth Meyers congratulated his friend and former SNL co-star Strong on her engagement, and the actress shared the not-so-smooth story of how it happened.

Cecily Strong remains the longest-running female cast member in Saturday Night Live history, spinning comedy gold for eleven seasons from 2012-2022. Strong and Seth Meyers struck up a friendship during their two-year overlap on the show, and their genuine fondness for each other makes Strong's visits to Late Night with Seth Meyers feel like a catchup session. That was certainly the case during Strong's March 27 interview, which opened with a sweet personal update.

"A lot of exciting news to talk about, but let's start with the big one," Meyers began. "Cecily got engaged!"

"I got engaged," Strong confirmed, nearly drowned out by the audience's cheers of congratulations.

"I know," she joked, pointing to Meyers, "You always said, 'No one will ever love you and you'll never get married.' You were wrong!"

"I am eating my words," Meyers laughed. "Did he pull it off well? Was it a surprise?"

Strong said that her fiancé fully intended to surprise her with the big moment, but that's not how things went.

"But I am kind of a detective," Strong continued. "We talked about getting married, and then one day he was like, 'I'm so inundated with e-mails and texts. Look at this,' and he showed me his phone."

But her apparently forthright boyfriend failed to scan his texts for the big giveaway. "The first text was from a friend, and it said, 'How did it go?! Ring emoji," she recounted. "And then I was like, 'Oh, no! should I...?' And he went, 'Did you see that?' And I was like, 'I could try very hard to lie.'"

Cecily Strong's partner held onto her engagement ring until one "rough night in December"

"I like that he was like, 'Did you see the thing I held in your face?'" Meyers said.

"Did you see it? Can you read? I just want to know before I ask you, are you able to read?" Strong joked back.

Meyers congratulated Strong on her engagement, though (like us) he wanted to know how it became official after that.

"I was like, 'Whenever you want to do it, that'll be the surprise.'," she said. Ultimately, the right moment naturally presented itself.

"I had kind of a rough night in December, and I was like, 'Can I just wear the damn ring now?' So that's how we got engaged," Strong revealed.

Meyers said he liked the idea of the ring as a "break glass in case of emergency" thing in this instance, though Strong said that she didn't make any part of it easy on her betrothed.

"I don't know my ring size. I buy, like, every size ring," Strong said. "So he took one of those that was like five sizes too big. I was wearing it on my index finger for a long time—not as a statement. It just would have fallen off."

Who is Cecily Strong's fiancé?

Strong is historically private about her personal life, so she chooses not to share photos of her partner—now fiancé!—on her social media.

In her 2020 memoir This Will All Be Over Soon, Strong wrote about meeting the love of her life during a period of grief over her cousin's brain tumor. According to a chapter published in Vulture, Strong met a "very cute" guy with a mustache named  "Jack" at a Christmas party in 2019.

"I like him. Our timing isn’t great," Strong wrote. "We both live in New York, but I’m about to go to California for a month. He’s going to Cuba for two weeks." Yet they grow closer over the subsequent months. We'll let you read the emotional essay for yourself—it's clear from what she shares that "Jack" sounds like a really great guy.
