With the 2022 Rockefeller Christmas tree officially lit, it's time to usher in the holiday season. And what better way to do that than with a festive Christmas carol, courtesy of Kelly Clarkson herself?
Thanks to the November 30 re-release of the talk show Host's 2021 special, When Christmas Comes Around, we were treated to an encore of Clarkson's pitch-perfect rendition of "Underneath the Tree." Her performance occurs in the opening scene of the special, in which she was joined by fellow stars Brett Eldredge, Ariana Grande, Jay Leno, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Odom Jr., and Amy Poehler.
"Underneath the Tree"—an original track—was first released on Clarkson's 2013 album Wrapped in Red and quickly became a classic. She even performed the track while a Coach on The Voice in 2020 (watch above).
"There aren’t many holiday songs for people feeling lost and just plain sad," Clarkson said about the emotional single. "The holidays come with a whole range of emotions. I’m going to be real with y’all: When I wrote this next song, I was crying my face off, which happens even at Christmas time. I’d just put my kids to bed, and I was just going through it, having a really hard time."
You can watch her sing both "Underneath the Tree" and "Merry Christmas (To the One I Used to Know)" right now on NBC. And if that's not enough, Clarkson has plenty more Yuletide bops to add to your playlist.
