Chris Stapleton Has Many Connections to The Voice: Here's a Show Refresher

Chris Stapleton's hit songs, including "Tennessee Whiskey," are a favorite to sing for many contestants on The Voice over the seasons.

By Caitlin Schunn

Although he was never an Artist who competed on The Voice, country singer Chris Stapleton still gets plenty of love from its Coaches and its singers — and even performed himself on The Voice stage once.

How to Watch

Watch The Voice Mondays and Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

Most recently, viewers saw his influence when Morgan Myles performed Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey” during the Top 10 in the fall of 2022. It was during an episode in which fans selected songs for the artists to perform, speaking to Stapleton's popularity with The Voice audience.

Who Is Chris Stapleton?

Stapleton got his start in eastern Kentucky, writing songs and teaching himself to play guitar as a teenager, according to the Country Music Hall of Fame. He moved to Nashville as a teen to attend Vanderbilt University and study biomedical engineering but dropped out after a year to write and play songs in bars instead.

He made his mark as a writer for others first, and scored his first Billboard number one hit as a songwriter with Josh Turner’s “Your Man” in 2006, the Hall of Fame said. He then went on to write number one hits with Kenny Chesney’s “Never Wanted Nothing More” in 2007 and Luke Bryan’s “Drink a Beer” in 2014.

He also sang background vocals on several songs he co-wrote for artists like Jake Owen and Thomas Rhett.

He finally got solo success in 2015 with his debut album Traveller, before rising as a star following his performance with Justin Timberlake at that year’s Country Music Awards. He won CMA awards for Male Vocalist of the Year, Album of the Year, and New Artist of the Year at that ceremony.

Morgan Myles told Parade she saw herself following in Stapleton’s footsteps because of that performance Stapleton had with Timberlake.

“I remember watching that and going, ‘Finally this country soul lane is about to blow up and I belong there,’” Myles told Parade. “So the fact that that slot in country music still has not been filled by a female, I’m hoping the fans just laid it out there for everybody to be like, ‘Knock knock knock! Hello, this is is it,’ because I belong there.”

Myles ended up placing third in Season 22, but shortly thereafter she was invited to make her Grand Ole Opry debut in Nashville, according to Music Mayhem Magazine.

Chris Stapleton Sings on The Voice

Stapleton took the stage himself with his acoustic guitar during the Season 12 finale of The Voice in 2017, performing his single “Either Way.” His songs were a popular choice for the Artists that season, with Casi Joy performing “Parachute” and Jesse Larson singing “Tennessee Whiskey."

The country star also has another The Voice connection. He collaborated with Coach Kelly Clarkson in 2021 for the song “Glow.” She told fans during an Instagram chat that working with him was “so magical” and said, “I love his voice,” according to Distractify.
