Mariska Hargitay's Youngest Son, Andrew, Asked Her the Sweetest Question About Fame

The Law & Order: SVU star's youngest son sees Hargitay as his mom, and not as a famous actress.

Mariska Hargitay may play one of the most beloved detectives in television history, but her youngest son has not yet been clued into all the fuss.

How to Watch

Watch Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Thursdays on NBC and next day on Peacock.

In a January interview with People, the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star talked about the touching experience that comes with playing Captain Olivia Benson. More specifically, how random people in New York City will approach her and praise her for all she's done.

However, her 12-year-old son Andrew often gets confused by the interactions.

“He thinks I play a cop on TV, end of story,” she told the outlet, after disclosing that Andrew has not yet seen SVU himself. “So he asked ‘Why does everyone say I love you when we're walking down the street?'"

Along with Andrew, Hargitay shares two other children with her longtime husband, Peter Hermann: 17-year-old August and 12-year-old Amaya. When Hargitay was on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on February 8, she talked about the surprise party that her family threw for her 60th birthday that involved a personalized concert.

"It was so magical and spectacular," Hargitay told Fallon. "And the highlight was each one of my children sang to me...I didn't know about it! My kids don't sing. They've never sang in public, so I had no idea. This was such a surprise!"

Their songs of choice? August, sang "Blue Bayou" by Linda Ronstadt and "Blue Christmas" by Elvis, while Amaya, sang "Long Live" by Taylor Swift,  and Andrew," sang "Crazy Train" by Ozzy Osbourne.

Amaya's selection was extra fitting, as she and her mom are massive Swifties. Hargitay took Amaya to Taylor Swift's Eras Tour concert in August 2023, and Hargitay and Swift are actually close friends IRL

Hargitay is involved in all of her kid's interests. Back in January 30, Hargitay and August spent some mother-son bonding time when they attended a New York Nicks game together. In a fun video that the New York Knicks posted to their official X/Twitter account, Hargitay gives a big thumbs up to the screen before August's head pops in view.

Hargitay and August are also travel buddies, as he came with her and Hermann for an exciting adventure in Kenya. In the picture that Hargitay posted on her official Instagram page, she rocked flannel, sunglasses, and a hat, while August smiled from the backseat of the car they were riding in.
