The first season of NBC's time-traveling sci-fi drama, La Brea, wrapped last November. But that doesn't mean we haven't stopped thinking about the heart-pumping finale, which left us with way more questions than answers.
Looking ahead to Season 2, we've analyzed the storylines we're most curious about in order to figure out what must be answered in the months ahead.
What year did Riley, Josh, and Lily travel to?
The finale saw all three unintentionally snatched into the same time loop as Isiah (a.k.a. young Gavin), played by Diesel La Torraca. This could mean they followed the young boy to 1988—or they could show up in a completely new time period.
"Their story will be outside of 10,000 B.C," show creator David Appelbaum told TV Line. "That will be one of the fun things about Season 2, finding them in a world completely different from anything we’ve seen on the show so far."
Who are Silas and Rebecca Aldridge?
The true identities of Silas (Mark Lee) and Aldridge (Ming-Zhu Hii) are two of the biggest question marks of the series. What we know about the characters is few and far between: they're scientists, colleagues, and Skypeople (from an unknown place in time) who know way more about time travel than they're letting on. However, Silas uses his knowledge to seemingly sabotage the La Brea Skypeople, while Aldridge drops various cryptic hints that, so far, have helped them navigate 10,000 B.C.
One detail Appelbaum did reveal to TV Line is that Silas actually is Isiah/Gavin's grandfather, which may put to rest a few fan theories. We're set to finally uncover the rest of the mystery surrounding Silas and Aldridge in Season 2.
"We’re going to learn more about what [Silas'] connection to Gavin and to Aldridge is," Appelbaum said. "He’ll be an important part of the story moving ahead."
Is Marybeth dead?
One of the Season 1 finale's most heartbreaking moments was watching Lucas (Josh McKenzie) fight to save his estranged mother, Marybeth (Karina Logue), who was suffering from a stab wound. Her fate was left unclear, but sadly, Appelbaum confirmed to EW Marybeth is actually dead. We'll see Lucas grapple with this reality in the second season.
"The death of a parent certainly has a huge effect on anyone and Lucas is going to be struggling with, especially as we begin Season 2, thinking about all the ways that their relationship went wrong and having his heart broken just as they were starting to mend fences," he said. "So it's going to be something that he's really going to have to reckon, and it is going to influence his story. I won't get too deep into that, but it is going to be a big emotional part of the adventure that he begins in Season 2."
How will Gavin, Izzy, and Ella get from Seattle to L.A.—and are they actually in 10,000 B.C.?
We saw them all make the decision to jump through the Seattle sink hole (without any supplies, food, or water we might add) in order to help their loved ones in 10,000 B.C.
"There is no clearing, and there are no other people that they’ve fallen down there with, so it’s going to be an interesting thing to see what they do—and if they can get there," Appelbaum told TV Line.
There are a couple problems with Gavin, Izzy, and Ella's plan. One, there was no guarantee that they traveled to the exact moment in time as the La Brea sink hole victims. And two, if they made it to 10,000 B.C., that means they must find a way to safely travel the more than 1,000 miles from Seattle to L.A.–without the modern comforts of a GPS or car. They're going to need all the luck they can get in Season 2.
Will Eve choose Gavin or Levi?
While Eve's (Natalie Zea) love life was low on the priority list when compared to all of Season 1's life or death situations, her relationship status was an intriguing subplot. We know that she was separated from Gavin pre-sink hole, and we later learn that she began an affair with his best friend, Levi (Nicholas Gonzalez), who also ended up in 10,000 B.C. after a failed mission to save the La Brea sink hole victims.
Eve and Levi have been stuck in the very distant past together, and there are clearly some unresolved feelings. But now with Gavin traveling from Seattle for a reunion, it will put Eve in a tricky spot when it comes to determining which man she sees a future with—if either of them.
What is in Aldridge's mysterious tower?
The most intriguing cliffhanger from the finale was the tower Aldridge revealed to Scott (Rohan Mirchandaney). We literally know nothing about it aside from the fact Aldridge is connected to it, and for some reason, she wanted Scott to know about it. The structure is also mysteriously modern for it to somehow exist in the 10th millennium. Appelbaum told TV Line that there are "a lot of interesting things inside there."
"We are going to explore this building and go into it at a certain point and see what’s inside," he said. "I think that’s going to be one of the fun things, really opening up this world that they are in."
La Brea Season 2 will return to Tuesday nights on NBC in fall 2022. You can watch the full first season now on Peacock.
