On October 18, Clarkson performed a badass cover of "New Attitude" by Patti LaBelle during the premiere week of Season 5 of The Kelly Clarkson Show. But the best part? Musician Paul Shaffer, who was the musical director for Late Night with David Letterman, was there playing the keyboard with her band, My Band Y'all

During Clarkson's cover, she jumped right in, singing along to the upbeat rhythm. She sang with a hint of a twang in her voice, hitting an impressive belted note right off the bat. She kept up the power throughout the rest of the song, ending things on a strong note as always.

"Paul just learned that we don't have rehearsal. We just come out and we do it," Clarkson revealed to the cheering crowd when the performance was over.

"That's the only way to do it," Shaffer responded. "It all works for you." (We sure think so too!)

Shaffer then welcomed Clarkson to her new studio at the legendary 30 Rockefeller Plaza, where they did the original Late Night with David Letterman.

Written for the 1984 film Beverly Hills Cop, "New Attitude" rose to the 17th position on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts that year. The lyrics tell the story of a woman who exudes confidence and won't let anything bring her down.

In 2022, American Songwriter listed "New Attitude" as the fourth best LaBelle song, crediting the tune with launching her career in the pop music and dance club spaces as her first major hit as a solo artist.
