Jimmy Fallon Blew His Chance to Date Nicole Kidman: Details

"Wait, what's going on?" asked the shocked Tonight Show Host in an archive clip. "Did I date Nicole Kidman? Was that a date?"

Nicole Kidman might go to AMC Theaters for magic, but she goes on The Tonight Show to embarrass Host Jimmy Fallon.

How to Watch

In January 2015, the Oscar-winning actress swung by the late-night talk show to promote her new movie, Paddington, and her appearance ended up being one of the most classic and infamous interviews from The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

After Fallon welcomed Kidman onto the show, he told her, "I don't remember if you remember this, but we've met before."

"Oh, I remember," she replied with a devious smile. It turned out that unbeknownst to Fallon, he had gone on a date with Kidman years earlier, when she went over to his apartment with a mutual friend of theirs.

"Do you remember this? It was really embarrassing for me," confessed Fallon.

"I have not seen you since then," Kidman said, as she let Fallon tell his version of their "date."

He then recounts how his friend, Rick, called Fallon up and said he was bringing Kidman over to his apartment for what Fallon thought was about him maybe starring in the Bewitched movie with her.

"I just remember I liked you..." Kidman recalled. This remark left Fallon speechless, as he realized that the "apartment hang" was actually a date.

"Wait, what's going on?" he asked, looking around confused. "Did I date Nicole Kidman? Was that a date?" Kidman then proceeded to paint a picture of their meeting, with every detail being more embarrassing than the last.

"So I go over there, and you're there in a baseball cap and nothing, and you wouldn't talk. You didn't say anything," Kidman recounted. "And then you put a video game on or something, and I'm like, 'This is so bad.' And you didn't talk at all. So after about an hour and a half I thought, 'He has no interest, this is so embarrassing.' And I left and went, 'OK, no chemistry,' and I went, 'Maybe he's gay.'"

At this point, the audience, and everyone in the studio were in hysterics at the increasingly awkward reunion.

"I am in shock right now. I can't believe I dated Nicole Kidman. This is fantastic," said Fallon.

"You made a much better decision, Keith Urban is so much cooler than I am," he added, referring to Kidman's husband (and The Voice Season 25 Mega Mentor!).

The two tried to continue their conversation by discussing other topics like Urban performing at Niagara Falls and Kidman's villainous turn in Paddington, but they couldn't get through it with a straight face, as they kept returning to their initial "date."

While preparing for the upcoming two-hour special celebrating the 10-year anniversary of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the Host went through some of his favorite moments from the show with Variety, and he explained what made his interview with Kidman so genuine and real.

“I did not know that was going to happen. It was not scripted. It did not go through a pre-interview," he revealed. "It was a legitimate moment, a real awkward moment. I was embarrassed, and she was embarrassed.”

Kidman returned to The Tonight Show the following year, in 2016, and she reminded him of another encounter between the two — at director David Fincher's house, when Fallon could have asked for her number but didn't. The Big Little Lies actress eventually brought out her husband, Urban, to join them, and cheekily show that she has very much moved on.

Kidman and Fallon might not have had a romantic connection, but their Tonight Show interviews are pure magic nonetheless!
