Back in February 2023, the America's Got Talent Season 12 winner shared a clip of herself singing an a cappella rendition of "Broken Halos" by Chris Stapleton. During her version, she sang the emotional lyrics with and old-school country tone, and her vulnerability will have you reaching for the tissues.

What to know about "Broken Halos" by Chris Stapleton

The opening track off  Stapleton's 2017 album From a Room: Volume 1, "Broken Halos" reached the number-45 position on the Billboard Hot 100 and won a Grammy Award for Best Country Song in 2018.

“Broken Halos” is a straightforward, uncluttered opener, designed to welcome – not overwhelm – the listener," Rolling Stone wrote about the tune in 2017.

When Stapleton was on The Howard Stern Show in 2018, he explained that the lyrics tell the story of coping with grief after loved ones pass on. “[The song is] about friends who have died are all broken halos, like the halos of an angel,” he said.

According to the interview, the concept of the song was inspired by the memoir of Rolling Stone member Keith Richards called Life.

“There was a line that he was talking about friends that he had lost over time that had gone on before their time, for various reasons, and he referred to them as broken halos, and so he thought that was worth a song,” Stapleton said.

"Broken Halos" by Chris Stapleton lyrics

Seen my share of
Broken halos
Folded wings that used to fly

They've all gone
Wherever they go
Broken halos that used to shine

Split of Darci Lynne and Chris Stapleton

Angels come down
From the heavens
Just to help us on our way
Come to teach us
Then they leave us
And they find some other soul to save

Seen my share of
Broken halos
Folded wings that used to fly
They've all gone
Wherever they go
Broken halos that used to shine
Broken halos that used to shine

Don't go looking
For the reasons
Don't go asking
Jesus why?
We're not meant to know the answers
They belong to the by and by
They belong to the by and by

Seen my share of
Broken halos
Folded wings that used to fly
They've all gone
Wherever they go
Broken halos that used to shine
Broken halos that used to shine

Broken halos that used to shine
Broken halos that used to shine
