A Voice Contestant Had Her 1st Dance With Her Fiancée on the Show (and Dan + Shay Sang)

How do we get these Coaches to jump start our wedding reception?!

By Benjamin Bullard

For most Blind Audition Artists on The Voice, it’s magical enough if even one Coach makes that fateful turn to signal that their musical journey on the show is only just getting started.

How to Watch

Watch The Voice on NBC and Peacock.

But a Chair turn from John Legend was merely the appetizer for Artist Zoe Levert’s bigger-than-life moment in the Season 25 spotlight, thanks to a totally unplanned (and totally awesome) on-the-spot concert right after the audition ended — all delivered in double-fast fashion, courtesy of fellow Coaches Dan + Shay.

Dan + Shay staged an unplanned performance uniquely meant for two, after finding out that Zoe and Ryan, her fiancée, have been deep in the planning stages for their upcoming wedding. After Zoe let it slip that she was already eyeing Dan + Shay’s hit single “From the Ground Up” (from their 2016 album Obsessed) as the leadoff song at the couple’s reception, well — how could two tender-hearted country superstars really refuse?

What’s especially wild about Dan + Shay’s impromptu performance is just how flawlessly they nailed the actual execution. Even Legend was impressed at their nimble musical reflexes, after Dan Smyers grabbed a guitar (with Shay Mooney leaping into instant microphone duty), hopped on the stage, and even offered to help Zoe and Ryan get hitched on the spot.

It all happened a little too fast to actually tie the knot right then and there for Zoe and Ryan, who first came together after meeting in music class as New Orleans college students. But the happy musical couple fell fast under Dan + Shay's spell, slow-dancing onstage while the Coaches turned in an arena-ready rendition of their powerhouse song — all while leaving Legend in awe when the dust (and maybe even a few happy tears) had finally settled.

“Imma tell y’all — that man Shay can sing a song!” Legend beamed, while also serving up some inspired Coaches’ advice as he and Zoe look toward their musical future together as co-conspirators on Team Legend.

“Zoe had some challenges at the beginning of her performance, but once she kicked it into high gear with the higher notes, I really loved the tone in her voice,” he added, thinking ahead to the tests that lie just around the bend as the Season 25 Knockouts round approaches. “It was beautiful, and I think she’ll do a great job!”

More than the music, though, it was really an example of the awesome and even life-changing moments that can happen on The Voice when an aspiring Artist gets the chance to share their music — and their happiness — with the world.

“I’m so happy for everything that's happening in your life; I’m so happy that you got to be serenaded by these amazing artists over here,” Legend told Zoe. “Only on The Voice, folks — only on The Voice!”

How far will Zoe go with Team Legend? Find out by watching Season 25 of The Voice, with new episodes airing on NBC Mondays at 8/7c and Tuesdays at 9/8c, and streaming the next day on Peacock.
