“I’m Speechless”: How RLETTO's “Signature Tone" Caused "Goosebumps" (& a Battle Win)

It's always inspiring to see The Voice Artists dedicate performances to their loved ones.

By Josh Weiss

It's always inspiring to see Artists on The Voice relate their musical journey to a genuine emotional source outside of the heated competition. Ahead of his Battle with Val T. Webb on Tuesday night's (March 26) episode, Team Chance member RLETTO dedicated the upcoming performance of Whitney Houston's "Saving All My Love for You" to his mother.

How to Watch

Watch The Voice Mondays and Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

"My parents are divorced. I have a single mom [who is a] warrior," said the 27-year-old from Orlando, Florida. "I was never introduced to this affectionate love thing. The love that I got was my mom's love for taking care of two kids by herself. I'm gonna sing this song for my mom [and] that's gonna help me connect to the lyrics a little better."

Webb, on the other hand, linked the impending Battle to the love she feels for her husband. "He's such a support," said the 43-year-old Artist from New Braunfels, Texas. "He helps me with my daughter. He's an amazing father to his children, my bonus daughters. He's also a musician, so he understands what it takes to do what we do."

Dan Smyers (of Dan + Shay fame) praised the Battle as "one of the most iconic performances I’ve ever seen." He continued, "Val, you've got such range and such a beautiful tone in your higher register there. Such control. RLETTO, you're a star, man. That richness in the lower register of your voice, I was getting goosebumps. I was feelin' it."

"RLETTO, you have that signature tone. You know exactly who you are," added Shay Mooney. "I can't wait to buy your records."

John Legend came next, praising RLETTO for his "artistic point of view" and Val for her "pure and beautiful" voice, over which she exerts exemplary control. Both Legend and Dan + Shay couldn't decide on who should advance to Knockouts.

Reba McEntire, however, cast her ballot for Webb, stating, "Val, you just reminded all of us why you got a Four-Chair Turn. Your vocals are stupendous, beautiful, sweet. I can sit and listen to you all day long. RLETTO, I love your style, the way you sing, but Val just slays me with her vocals. I'd have to choose Val."

The choice was tough, but Chance had to go with RLETTO as the winner because of the Contestant's strong sense of individuality. "He's a dude who walks to the beat of his own drum ... it's hard not to admire that," Chance said. But before she could leave the stage, Webb was stolen over to Team Legend. So, in a way, everyone wins!
