Clarkson is no stranger to taking an iconic track and transforming it into an entirely new masterpiece, with an EP full of her jaw-dropping Kellyoke performances as proof. The latest and greatest from the vocal powerhouse is an emotional cover of Katy Perry's "The One That Got Away" (off Perry's blockbuster 2010 album Teenage Dream). Needless to say, Clarkson's cover was chilling.

From the moment Clarkson took the stage, it was clear the crowd was in for an intimate performance, complete with low lighting. Clarkson looked effortlessly elegant in a burgundy dress and slick boots, joined only by Jaco Caraco on the acoustic guitar. Clarkson stripped the song of its pop-centric influences to instead focus on its melancholy lyrics—choosing a slowed-down acoustic arrangement for her haunting rendition.

Clarkson allowed her vocals and the song's nostalgia-inducing lyrics to tell the story. And it's a tale that's bound to give every listener goosebumps.

With each passing verse, Clarkson continued to pour her emotions into the song, never shying away from its message about meeting the perfect person at the wrong time. By the song's first chorus, Clarkson delivered squeaky-clean high notes, giving the song an ethereal quality that works well with the lyrics.

Clarkson isn't a stranger to a powerful belting moment, and during the song's second chorus, she delivered just that as she increased to a crescendo. Each of Clarkson's "the one that got away" repetitions built and built until the song's final moments. That's when Clarkson reverted to the angelic high notes from the track's beginning. The result? A completely jaw-dropping build to the emotionally raw final note. It's safe to say this performance left the audience breathless; they, of course, jumped to their feet to applaud Clarkson. Who wouldn't?
