Right when Kelly Clarkson hit it big 20 years ago, she had one luxury item in mind to spend her money on.

How to Watch

Watch The Voice Mondays and Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

In a recent interview with Access, the “Since U Been Gone” singer gave us a hilarious backstory on the way she decided to treat herself after winning the first season of American Idol in 2002.

“I got a plasma TV. A $15,000 plasma TV Isn’t that insane?" she said. "Like, it was just fun because I’ve never been able to even walk in anywhere and even look at it. So, I walked right in, and I was like, ‘Oh I’ll take that one’ with my friends. I was with my friends, and they were like, ‘How do you wanna pay?’ and I was like ‘…cash.'"

She continued with a giggle, “I was like, I had it. I went and got cash. That’s how cool I felt. Because I got to walk in. But then, at the end, I felt like Pretty Woman, like, I just didn’t belong, giving them all that [money]. It was very awkward."

Clarkson added about the reasoning behind her purchase, “Here’s the thing. Here’s the backstory to that. We grew up with one TV in our house, and I had no control over it. Honestly, people don’t know this, but I literally was living in my car for a bit before Idol; my place had burned down, and I didn’t have anything. And I thought...I had a box of stuff so it was like, I had nothing. So it was like, ‘Well, I guess I’ll start with the TV!’”

From one singing competition show to another: Clarkson will soon be returning to The Voice as a Coach for Season 23. She took a brief hiatus in Season 22 for The Kelly Clarkson Show, and we can’t wait to see what she has in store, especially surrounding her playful rivalry with fellow Coach Blake Shelton.

Watch The Voice on Peacock and NBC. And as always, check your local listings for The Kelly Clarkson Show.
