Relive Dr. Bruce's Hilarious Dance Routine on St. Denis Medical Episode 17
Could St. Denis Medical's Dr. Bruce have a career in dance ahead of him? You decide.
St. Denis Medical boss, Joyce (Wendi McLendon-Lovey), isn’t the only member of the hospital staff who gets to show off their dancing skills. Actor Josh Lawson, who plays everyone’s favorite egotistical surgeon, Bruce, just left it all on the dance floor.
In the newest episode of St. Denis Medical (which you can watch now on Peacock), the hospital hosts its annual fundraiser gala. There’s a lot to the event, including a Dancing with the Doctors competition, which Dr. Bruce is entering solo.
“The last few years I’ve come in second place, which I suspect is because of various partner-based weaknesses,” he remarks in true Bruce fashion.

The competition was judged by three people, including nurse Serena (Kahyun Kim) who prides herself on being tough yet fair in her scoring. After a performance from Chaplain Steve (Steven Schneider) and his dance partner, it was time for the surgeon to take the floor and perform his meticulously choreographed solo dance routine.
The lights turned off and a video began playing of a young boy, who says that Dr. Bruce saved him from having to use a wheelchair, all thanks to the power... of dance.
Suddenly, Bruce is on the dance floor, complete with a smoke machine entrance and a flashy gold jacket. His performance continued with non-stop flair, with him cutting a wood board in half with one hand and dancing on top of the judges' table.
After finishing with a confetti canon and a confident pose, Dr. Bruce earned a score of 28, with two 10s and a lone 8 given by, of course, Serena. Those who have watched St. Denis Medical and seen Bruce's ego at work likely know that not receiving a perfect score sent him into a spiral. Still, Serena didn't think he deserved higher marks from her.
“I don’t believe in giving 10s. A 10 means you can’t imagine anything better. Like, Ryan Gosling is the hottest man alive. But is he a 10? No. He’s a 9,” Serena quipped.
Nonetheless, Dr. Bruce is still in the lead, until a woman begins dancing with her father, who is in a wheelchair. While she was twirling her dad’s chair, a home video played in the background, showing the two dancing before he was in the wheelchair when she was a child.
The emotional performance, which almost makes the reluctant Bruce tear up, gives the father-daughter duo the winning score of 29.5.
Dr. Bruce later confronts Serena, letting her know he will be reporting her being inebriated while judging to Joyce out of spite, or as he called it, integrity.
St. Denis Medical stars reflect on Season 1 dancing spectacular
Multiple cast members, including Allison Tolman, who plays supervising nurse Alex, have dubbed it one of their favorite episodes yet, and quite a fun day on set.
“It's a great, it's a great episode. It's a great dance number,” Tolman told NBC Insider.
“Yeah, it must have been funny because I did hear, um, a lot of stifled laughter as I was doing it,” Lawson added.
Even comedian David Alan Grier, also known as the hilarious Dr. Ron in the series, couldn’t help but get a kick out of the dancing and noted when he spoke with NBC Insider during a separate interview that he thought the dance routine was one of the funniest moments he could recall on set.
Did Josh's dance make you laugh as much as it did them?
