Co-developed by Superstore creators Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin, St. Denis Medical takes the mockumentary approach and shifts the focus from the big box retail world to the hallways of a busy Oregon hospital. The cringeworthy antics of the doctors and staff are ripe for satire, but the series has won over fans with something a bit more optimistic and heartfelt.
Maybe it’s the over-the-top physical gags, like when “pratfall master” Meeki Leeper falls over a medical cart playing the anxious newbie nurse, Matt. Or the fact that the two main funny ladies, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Alison Tolman, take inspiration from their real-life moms for their roles. McLendon-Covey plays Joyce, a perennially put-upon hospital administrator, and Tolman plays the officious head nurse, Alex.

The series will resume its normal schedule on March 11 at 8 p.m. ET with Episode 14, titled “Listen to Your Ladybugs.” According to a teaser from NBC, Joyce will launch a women’s health initiative with surprising results, and ER veteran Dr. Ron (David Alan Grier) apparently meets his match with a know-it-all patient.
