Bowen Yang Called Ego Nwodim's Weekend Update His "Favorite Televised Moment Ever"

The cast member had the audience going wild with a stand-up set that was (sort of) about the White House Correspondent's Dinner.

By Samantha Vincenty

Ego Nwodim had the Saturday Night Live audience hooting and (literally) hollering during the April 5 edition of "Weekend Update."

How to Watch

Watch Saturday Night Live Saturdays at 11:30/10:30c on NBC and Peacock, streaming next day on Peacock.

The comedian and actress's latest visit to the "Update" desk found her delivering a stand-up set in the style of a new persona — one that, as she informed anchor Colin Jost, is called "Miss Eggy." And she what? Don't play.

Nwodim was kinda, sorta there to comment on the White House Correspondents' Association's decision to cut the comedy portion of their annual dinner, canceling former Late Night with Seth Meyers writer Amber Ruffin's scheduled appearance (Jost hosted the event in 2024). But, pitching herself as the perfect WHCA host, Nwodim told Jost, "every year, a comedian gets up there talking trash about the White House, about the media,  but no one's ever just made fun of the dinner."

"Well, your whole set can't just be about the food," Jost said.

"Yes, it can. Just read the card," Nwodim shot back. Rising to her feet to grab a mic and her purse, she stood in front of the desk to deliver a hilarious spin on a cliched standup set.

Ego Nwodim's "Weekend Update" standup led to improv with the audience

"Hey, Chef, go ahead and hang that apron up bro, 'cause I'm doing the roasting tonight," Nwodim said, launching into a routine about "rank" food and disappointing men.

"I see y'all got jicama on the menu. More like jicama another man with another excuse: 'Oh, I lost my phone.' The hell?!" she said, as a confused Jost asked her where this was all going.

Ego Nwodim holiding a microphone and her hand up to her ear with Colin Jost and Michael Che sitting at a desk behind her.

'As if I didn't give that man five children and 10 years of my life," Nwodim continued.

"You don't have kids?!" Jost cried.

Part of Nwodim's play on a typical club comedy set was her use of catchphrases no one in the audience was familiar with, leading to (intentional) dead silence. But several audience members filled in the blanks when she posed that "men ain't ___," leading to a now bleeped-out moment that left Jost and Che laughing in genuine disbelief.

"Worth a damn, sucka!" Nwodim clarified. Pivoting with the finesse of the seasoned improviser she is, Nwodim had the audience further howling when she added, "Y'all gonna have to pay for that!"

Bowen Yang and the sketch's co-writers raved about Miss Eggy

Nwodim's "Weekend Update" segment was co-written by Carl Tart — who performed improv onstage alongside Nwodim for years before becoming an SNL writer in Season 50 — Josh Patten, Will Stephen, and Asha Ward.

She gave the team a shoutout on her Instagram story, as well as "that audience for keeping Miss Eggy on her toes!!!" Nwodim also commended the "incredible" SNL costume team headed by Tom Broecker for hand-creating the outfit she wanted Miss Eggy to wear, including wholly reconstructing a jacket sold in a store that was closed that day.

"Last night was a movie," Ward captioned the clip in her own Instagram stories on April 6.

Meanwhile, Nwodim's cast mate Bowen Yang wrote, "favorite televised moment ever!!! Emmy for eggy NOW!" And we can't disagree.

When did Ego Nwodim join SNL?

2018.

Nwodim joined Saturday Night Live in Season 44, after years as a performer at the Upright Citizens Brigade theater Los Angeles and an improviser often featured on the Comedy Bang! Bang! podcast.

On SNL, Nwodim's impressions include her viral Dionne Warwick, and she's also been known for characters like Lisa from Temecula.
