Case in point: The Grammy winner revealed during a 2020 The Tonight Show interview that the one and only Stevie Nicks gave her permission to sample her classic song “Edge of Seventeen.” And not only did Nicks extend her blessing to add a new spin to her 1981 hit, Cyrus also told Jimmy Fallon that she got the “coolest” letter from the Fleetwood Mac icon.

A split of Miley Cyrus and Stevie Nicks

It was just after the release of her “Midnight Sky” single that Cyrus shared the story behind how Nicks gave her the green light to sample one of her most famous solo songs.

“This is a good vibe, I love it. It’s a great song,” Fallon said. “And there’s a little sample of ‘Edge of Seventeen’ by Stevie Nicks. Did you ask Stevie for permission to use the song?”

Cyrus confirmed that she reached out to Nicks to fill her in on her idea.

“I have the coolest letter ever from Stevie,” she revealed. “I sent her the song and I said, ‘I have an alternate melody, if you don’t want me to kind of, like, pay tribute to you and your greatness and how much you’ve inspired me.’"

"And she said, ‘You can borrow from me any time'," Cyrus added.

The “Wrecking Ball” singer also shared she’s been influenced by how “open and welcoming” her music idols like Parton, Nicks, and Joan Jett have been. “They offer their mentorship,” Cyrus said, adding that her personal connection to Nicks has been “life-changing” for her.

“Everyone looks up to Stevie Nicks,” Cyrus told Fallon. “But having that direct relationship has been just, you know, kind of life-changing and just so important.”

After the letter, Miley Cyrus and Stevie Nicks collaborated the “Edge of Midnight" (Midnight Sky remix)

Her correspondence ultimately led to the Midnight Sky remix of Cyrus's “Edge of Midnight" — take a listen below. Nicks provided new vocals for the remix, which also features the signature guitar riff from “Edge of Seventeen.”

Cyrus shared on The Howard Stern Show that her letter exchange with Nicks inspired her to reach out once again for the remix.

“I'm like, 'S---, if you're feeling that way, can I just borrow, like, you and your time?'” she recalled. "That was one of the trippier experiences of my life — having my words come out of Stevie Nicks' mouth — because her words have come out of mine a billion times."

While they didn’t really know each other before this collab, Nicks revealed on The Zane Lowe Interview Series that she and Cyrus “just hit it off” when they got to work on “Edge of Midnight” together. As for Nicks’ recollection of Cyrus wanting to sample her music? In an interview with ABC Audio, Nicks confirmed, “I could not be more flattered.”'
