How Kyle Schuesler’s “Thoroughly Great” Falsetto Got Him an Honorary 4-Chair Turn

Kyle Schuesler earned unanimous approval from all four Coaches.

By Cassidy Ward

Kyle Schuesler grew up watching The Voice from his home in Huntington Beach, California, just a few dozen miles from the show's HQ in Los Angeles. With nothing but his guitar and a dream, he took to the stage for Season 25 with a crooning performance of Coldplay’s “The Scientist,” from the band’s 2002 album A Rush of Blood to the Head.

How to Watch

Watch The Voice Mondays and Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

As Coldplay performs it, “The Scientist” is a brooding piano-heavy ballad which relies as much on the tinkling of keys as it does on Chris Martin’s heart-piercing falsetto. Like a musical prism, Schuesler took the song, traded in the piano in favor of a guitar, and reflected it back out. The result was hauntingly familiar while offering a few welcome sonic surprises.

John Legend was the first to turn, and for a while it was a one-on-one performance. Chance the Rapper, having already filled up his team, was happily grooving in the background while the other Coaches deliberated. Dan Smyers, of the Coach duo Dan + Shay, held a hovering hand over the buzzer, uncertain. But together, Dan + Shay smashed that button just as soon as Schuesler hit the high-frequency vocal runs at the end of his performance. And Reba McEntire slid through with only a few seconds remaining, earning Schuesler a Three-Chair Turn.

"Schuesler, I couldn't turn around, but I love that song,” Chance said. “When people tune in they want to see amazing songs they know and love but reimagined and brought to life by new people, and that's what you did. Think of this as a Four-Chair Turn, I would have turned if I had more spots."

“I’m so happy you sang that song. We all love to Chris Martin, you did some of his kind of vocal stylings, but you also really made the song your own,” Legend said. “I turned really early compared to these other Coaches."

"What's up, Kyle? Dude, sick performance," Shay said. "I'm curious, do you ever do any alt-country kind of stuff? I could really hear you doing that kind of thing and putting your own spin on that style of music."

Seeing an opportunity to strike, Legend mentioned that Schuesler deserves a Coach of a single mind, someone capable of focus. Someone named John Legend. Dan + Shay, for their part, suggested that two Coaches are actually better than one.

Ultimately Schuesler agreed with the latter, taking the last spot on Team Dan + Shay.
