Melissa Rauch's Night Court character, Abby Stone, is an ambitious Judge who is focused on her career. But as we learn early on, she has a solid love life, as well. She was engaged, and her fiancé had plans to move to Manhattan with her in the near future. However, they broke things off. Here's what happened:

How to Watch

Watch Night Court on NBC and Peacock.

In Season 1, Episode 5, Abby was having some issues with the smell in her apartment that was located over a beer hall. However, she decided to keep her head up, as always, as her then-fiancé Rand was set to visit during the weekend. (He wanted to see where the ladies from The View lived!)

Abby and Rand had been doing a long distance relationship since she moved to Manhattan for her new job as night court Judge. He currently lives in upstate New York, and the two often meet at a diner located at the halfway point between them for some clam chowder. Abby soon begins a new apartment hunt, looking forward to having something to show Rand for his upcoming visit.

When Abby learned she got the apartment she was eyeing, she excitedly texted Rand to inform him of the news. However, as she looked at her phone, she sighed and walked away. When Dan Fielding begrudgingly inquired why she was upset, Abby revealed that Rand was not coming down for the weekend, after all. He had to cancel last minute due to something coming up at work, which Abby pretended to brush off.

“You don’t always have to try to find a positive spin. You’re allowed to be mad,” Dan reassured her.

“This transition has been a little harder than I thought,” Abby confessed.

"...And Rand isn’t here! I want him to be here to help me with this stuff! And no, I know it's not totally fair to make him uproot his life just for me to pursue a dream, but I want it anyway!” she then outcried when Dan pushed her to vent her frustrations, causing her to be overcome with emotion.

“You’re gonna tell Rand you want him to move down here now?” Dan asked when they were grabbing lunch later in the episode.

“I’m not quite ready for that,” Abby responded.

Then, in Season 1, Episode 10, we finally get introduced to Rand on Night Court. Played by Pete Holmes, Rand travels to Manhattan to help Abby train for a marathon. The two decide to bond with new friend Olivia by convincing her to join them during the race.

“She’s about to take training to a whole ‘nother level. Y’know, she starts out slow but then she a new mode…a beast mode,” Rand explained to Olivia. However, this was an exaggeration to encourage her competitive side.

“You were a beast in law school, now look at you! You’re one of the youngest Judges to ever sit on the bench in New York!” Rand later says to Abby.

However, Abby takes Rand's words too far, and ends up injuring herself at the gym. While confiding to Dan Fielding, she says that she didn’t like that she had to rely on Rand’s advice to make friends. “Since I moved down here I’ve been able to do things my way, and I liked it," she said.

Dan responds by saying it must be difficult for Rand to figure out how he fits into her new life, which Abby agrees.

In time, Abby finally realizes she and Rand want different things and they called their wedding off.

Who is Pete Holmes?

Pete Holmes is an actor and comedian who is best known for his talk show The Pete Holmes Show which ran from 2013-2014.

“Pete and I had the pleasure of working together, during my stand-up days. We did a show called Best Week Ever together, and we did some stand-up tours together. And I was very fond of him when I met him then, and then we were thinking about who could fill the Rand shoes of this man that we had been talking about all season. Pete's name came up and I was so grateful when I reached out to him that he immediately said yes,” Melissa Rauch said of Holmes in an interview with NBC Insider. “And he's so funny and so terrific to work with. And we all just loved having him around. It's wonderful when you see what;s crafted on the page and the writers did such a wonderful job of creating this character that we  hadn't seen on screen. That there was so much fun and games around that character before we even got to meet him. And it was so wonderful watching Pete step into those Rand shoes and getting to see what he did with his character was just such a joy to watch."

Watch Night Court Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC. Episodes of the show will stream the next day on Peacock.
