How the NFL Draft order works
First, a quick refresher on how draft picks in the NFL work. Each round will have 32 picks, and there are seven rounds in total. But the first round, on Thursday April 24, is where the biggest names will be picked. So, how does the NFL decide who gets first choice? It all starts with the basic win-loss records of every NFL team. The team with the fewest wins in the previous season gets the first overall pick in the draft, with the team with the second-fewest wins going second, and so on.
The first 18 teams in the draft are chosen that way (with tiebreakers in place in case they have the same record), then the remaining teams are set based on the order in which they were eliminated during the previous season's NFL Playoffs. So, the teams who lost in the Wild Card rounds draft next, then the teams who lost in the Division round, then the Conference Championship runners up. Finally, the team who lost the Super Bowl gets the 31st overall pick, and the Super Bowl champions get the last pick in the first round.
That's the basic order to kick off the draft, but it's important to note that teams are allowed to trade draft picks up to and even during the draft. As of this writing, while there have been some trades in later rounds, no team has traded away their first round picks for the 2025 Draft, but that could change at any moment if the right deal comes up.
