Everything We Know About The Irrational Season 2

Behavioral science sleuth Alec Mercer will be back for a second season of The Irrational.

It’s only logical to get excited about this news: The Irrational has been renewed for a second season.

It looks like America’s favorite behavioral science professor will be reasoning his way through a whole new set of crimes next season after Deadline announced NBC made an early decision to renew its successful freshman dramas The Irrational and Found

But fans won’t have to wait that long to catch up with Alex Mercer, portrayed by Jesse L. Martin, and his ex-wife, FBI agent Marisa (Maahra Hill). Four new episodes of The Irrational are expected to round out the crime drama’s first season early next year after a brief hiatus.

What is The Irrational

The Irrational follows college professor and behavioral science expert Alec Mercer as he uses his unique ability to understand human behavior to help law enforcement and others in his life who need his logic-based form of justice.

"I know people and why they do inexplicable things," Alec said in the trailer for the explosive first season.

Not to be confused with Bill Nye “the science guy,” Alec is the “behavioral science guy” using logic, reasoning, and a slew of psychological principles to bring down kidnappers, murderers, and even a cheating poker tournament organizer.

But while Alec has helped solve some of the most complicated crimes, the one he has yet to decipher is the one closest to home. Alec was severely burned two decades ago in a church bombing that claimed the lives of 13 people. As the sole survivor, Alec (with the help of his ex-wife, Marisa) are determined to root out those responsible for the deadly blast.

Who stars on The Irrational

His unlikely bond (and possibly unfinished love story) with Marisa, a savvy FBI agent, isn’t the only connection Alec relies on to expose cunning criminals.

Alec also frequently enlists the help of his research assistants Phoebe (Molly Kunz) and Rizwan (Arash DeMaxi) and even occasionally relies on assistance from his tech-savvy sister Kylie (Travina Springer).

When will new episodes of The Irrational Return?

The final four episodes of Season 1 of The Irrational will air early next year, beginning Monday, January 29 at 10/9c on NBC.

Until then, fans can catch up on the first seven episodes of the series now streaming on Peacock.

When The Irrational left off, Marisa was getting closer to exposing the unknown mastermind of the church bombing, while she and Alec were each pursuing new romantic interests.

When will Season 2 of The Irrational premiere?

There will be a Season 2 of The Irrational, but there’s no word yet on when Season 2 will premiere or whether any new behavioral science sleuths will be joining the team.

Lisa Katz, President, Scripted Content, for NBCUniversal Entertainment, credited the success of the crime drama, and that of fellow new series Found, to the “talented” teams that brought the shows together.

“These shows are a testament to the incredibly passionate work of our showrunners Nkechi Okoro Carroll (Found) and Arika Lisanne Mittman (The Irrational), both of whom have executed their visions flawlessly,” she said. “A huge thank you to the talented cast, producers and crews for their tireless commitment and dedication, which has clearly paid off with audiences making these series must-see television on both NBC and next day on Peacock.”
