The "Dog Eat Dog" Reason Chrissy Metz Left L.A. After 21 Years

The This is Us star is excited to be in the next chapter of her life.

By Chris Phelan

From 2016 to 2022, viewers fell in love with Chrissy Metz thanks to her unforgettable performance as Kate Pearson in the NBC hit This is Us. But just three years later, Metz finds herself in a new stage of her life that she's very excited about:

She's moved out of Los Angeles!

The star recently packed up and moved to Nashville, Tennessee — a town pretty much Los Angeles' polar opposite. In an eye-opening April 4 interview with PEOPLE, Metz revealed her reasoning for leaving the city she called home for over two decades.

"There's a lot going on," she explained. "There's obviously great music, great food. I grew up in the South, so I'm used to sort of that hospitality — it feels more communal here. In L.A. it was always like, 'Oh, you have an audition? What's it for? Oh, you have an audition? What for?' It was all very dog eat dog!"

It sounds like Metz is following in the footsteps of many people looking for a less hectic way of life and a whole lot less traffic. The best part of her move? The actress/singing sensation is "15 minutes away" from everything — it really sounds like she doesn't regret her decision whatsoever!

"I was in LA for 21 years, but my family is in Florida, where I'm from, and during the pandemic, I could drive to them from here. It's just a better quality of life here. Everything is 15 minutes away, and it's just so much less stress."

Chrissy Metz opens up about her faith

On April 8, the 44-year-old's second kid's book, When I Talk to God, I Talk About Feelings, was released. And much like her first foray into authoring (2023's When I Talk to God, I Talk About You), Metz is not afraid to wear her faith on her sleeve and speak a message of love through children's books.

Someone should get her in touch with TODAY's Savannah Guthrie and Jenna Bush Hage. The three women have so much in common!

In fact, she calls praying "a way of life" — something many people can relate to.

"I pray all the time, anywhere for everyone," she confessed. "If I'm flying, I pray for every single person who gets on the plane, every piece of the plane, the pilots, the flight attendants, even if it's about positive collective consciousness if that's what you want to call it. I think it really helps and transcends when you have no control over the situation. Prayer for me is a way of life."

Metz understands that in 2025, religion and spirituality are taboo phrases for a lot of people, and she never feels the need to preach her beliefs to anyone despite her self-described "personal" relationship with God.

"It's not something I feel the need to beat people over the head with," she confessed. "Everyone has their journey and my journey with God is very personal. And it's very important in my life."
