Apples Never Fall star Annette Bening was the ultimate supportive friend when praising fellow Oscar nominee Jodie Foster.

Both actresses are in the running for the 96th Academy Awards for their spectacular performances in Nyad, the true story of long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad and her against-all-odds story to open swim 100-plus miles from Cuba to Florida. Bening is nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role, while Foster is up for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

Ahead of the award ceremony on March 10, Bening spoke with NBC Insider about the upcoming series Apples Never Fall, premiering Thursday, March 14, 2024, exclusively on Peacock, and touched on her connection with Foster.

Here's what one legendary actress had to say about the other:

Annette Bening on Jodie Foster’s Role in True Detective: Night Country

Bening explained that she and Foster discussed Foster’s work in True Detective: Night Country before she even started filming.

“She was going off to do [True Detective: Night Country] right after doing Nyad,” said Bening. “She’s like, ‘Yeah, I’m going to Iceland. ’And I was like, ‘Really? We’re in the Dominican Republic, and you’re going to Iceland?’”

In True Detective: Night County, Foster starred as Police Chief Liz Danvers, investigating the disappearances of a group of research scientists in the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska. Filming, however, primarily took place in and around Reykjavík and other Icelandic towns.

Bening told NBC Insider that the Silence of the Lambs star cited her time in Iceland as “an incredible experience.”

“And then afterward, with it all put together, she said to me, ‘Yeah, Annette, it’s really good!’” Bening continued. “So, she was really proud of it.”

Annette Bening on Her Friendship with Jodie Foster

Bening said she was “just so happy” for Foster, whose work includes Taxi Driver, The Accused, and Panic Room.

“We’ve become friends,” Bening continued. “[I’m] crazy about her.”

Bening, a five-time Oscar nominee whose impressive work has been showcased in The Grifters, The American President, and American Beauty, also discussed how she and Foster share a similar drive in their work, as highlighted in Nyad.

“She’s a wonderful human being, a great woman, and I’m happy for her,” Bening said. “She’s got so much experience, you know, she’s done so many things. But she’s like me. She loves the work, and she loves to just keep at it.”

Annette Bening Appears in Apples Never Fall

Bening is now up for her fifth Oscar nomination. Soon after the ceremony, audiences can see Bening as Joy Delaney in Apples Never Fall, an original limited series about one family’s disturbing secrets, based on the bestselling book of the same name by Lianne Moriarty (the writer behind Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers).

Joy and her husband, Stan (Sam Neill), have just sold their successful Florida tennis academy to settle comfortably into a state of retirement. Things take a sharp turn, however, when a mysterious, wounded young lady shows up at the couple’s doorstep shortly before Joy’s puzzling disappearance.

Jake Lacy, Alison Brie, Conor Merrigan-Turner, and Essie Randles costar as the couple's four adult children.

All seven episodes of Apples Never Fall drop on Thursday, March 14, 2024, on Peacock.
